I have a few questions about the RRP certification. I take the Class to get certified, Then do i send the epa money for the certification too? What about my employees,do i have to send in more money to the epa after the training course? I understand Company needs to be a lead certified Firm ($300) I just cant find out how much it costs to be certified after the training course for me and my employees? The places that give these training courses dont even know the costs! Can anyone give me a breakdown of the individual costs? BTW i am in Michigan.

1. Your company sends in $300 to the EPA to become a Lead Safe Certified Firm.

2. You or someone who works for you, pays to go to the 8 hour class and gets the Renovator certificate. Many places give this to you right after the class. No money is sent to the EPA for the Renovator certificate. You pay the guys teaching the class. Each trainer determines what the price will be.

If you have a large company, you may want to send 2 or more to the 8 hour class.

So, no class time is needed to become a certified firm?

I was under the impression that someone from every company has to take a 3-4 day course and then the employees do the one day 8 hour course???????

No class time to become a certified firm. Just send them the money and application and within 2 to 3 months, you'll get your cert. Here is the application http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/firmapp.pdf

to find a trainer for the 8 hour course, go here http://cfpub.epa.gov/flpp/searchrrp_training.htm

Do you know what criteria they have to become a certified firm?

It really confuses me (well being it's gvmt, I guess it makes sense that you simply just pay the bill), but how can a company be qualified with no training. I understand the workers are "trained", but???????

Thanks

That the firm doesn't have any previous violations. This also may include if your firm has been turned in operating as a non-lead safe firm.

The certification also acknowledges that the company is aware that there is a law and the assumption that the firm is familiar (read) with the law.

You take the class to get certified as an individual renovator. You then can get certification for your firm by sending an additional $300 (at least 1 person of that firm must be certified). The certified renovator can then train additional employees on sections of the rule. You must keep records for 3 years on their level of training.

Send in $160 bucks and schedule your class. There is no cost after taking the training course (unless you want your firm certified -- $300). The class instructor will issue you 2 paper certificates, one with your picture on it and the other with just your pertinent info.

Review the process:
Schedule class -- take 9 hour class -- take a small test/review at the end of class -- receive certification papers -- go home.

Ps. The test score does not determine if you get certs or not. Once you take the class and picture, you get your certificates and training book at the end of the day.

I took the class and I am a one man company. Do I still need to send money to the EPA to make my company certified or am I good? In my case what is the difference between a certified renovator and a certified firm. Is the firm certification just so one can train others.

Question

I own a sole proprietorship, and I plan to get trained and certified as a certified renovator. Will that be sufficient since I have no employees?

Answer

No. Beginning April 22, 2010, all firms performing renovations covered by the RRP rule must be certified. “Firm” means a company, partnership, corporation, sole proprietorship or individual doing business, association, or other business entity; a Federal, State, Tribal or local government agency; or a nonprofit
organization.

I've yet to obtain my certification personally I think the whole thing is BS just another liberal finding ways to cost the hard working honest American more money. However I will comply eventuality right now I'm not doing enough remodel work to justify the cost.:furious::censored::furious:

What about subs? Will subs need their own entity and certification of their own firm, along with the training?
I sure hope so.

Thanks for all the info.

Question

My firm performs renovations covered by the RRP rule, but solely in the capacity of a subcontractor. If the general contractor is a certified firm, does my firm also have to be certified, or can we just provide the
certified renovator?

Answer

All firms performing, offering, or claiming to perform renovations covered by the RRP rule must be certified. In this case, both the general contractor and subcontractor must become certified firms.

end of FAQ

The sub has to be a Lead Safe Certified Firm according to the above, but the sub doesn't have to have the 8 hour course and be a Certified Renovator. The GC can provide the Certified Renovator in theory.

However, you get into the IRS area, where a sub is an independent contractor and can't be told what or how to do the job. So in a way, the Certified Renovator can't tell the sub what to do. Although :), I guess it could be written up in a contract (with the sub) that certain EPA compliances have to be done. Starts getting gray.
