Hello All-

I am a licensed electrician, and a regular on Electrician Talk.

I am in the process of having a new roof and siding installed. The same contractor is doing both the roofing and the siding. My question is, how much of a gap should there be between the J channel for the siding and the new shingle? The contrctor has about a 1" gap, and is indicating that this is what the mfg recommends. The "baby tins" or flashing is viewable. Is this correct? I am in the Chicago area.

Thanks

what gap??????

If the guy is putting the roof on he nedds to roof it flash it then j goes right on top of the flash. no need for a gap here thats just silly. I have been doing siding since I was old enough to play on the job site with my dads insulation as he worked. lol. Im currently 27 and been acctually doing the work since i was 15 and he is going on over 30 years of nothing at but vinyl siding and vinyl window installation.

Tom that looks nice, but you just made the roofer's job extremly difficult. When I worked as a roofer it was the companies policy to replace all step flashing. To replace the step flashing on your siding job will be very hard without making that copper look like hell.

FYI that roof wouldn't pass inspection here.

don't say stuff like this:no:just because we do things for along time don't make it right,i just haven't found a way to pull hollow corners and flexible j off the roof and make it look nice,my hats off to those that have

To replace the step the j has to come off anyway, since it's nailed on through the step flashing. It does look and is in fact wrong, but it doesn't make it any harder to replace the step.

OTOH Tom, I really like the way you cut the bottom j to run out past the corner.

It is vinyl siding, it is not that difficult to take a couple courses off and replace step flashing if you need to.

Some people act like they can't handle anything that requires a little patience and skill.

Roofers, charge for pulling siding, re-flashing and re-installing the siding.

Back to our regularly scheduled program now.
