Cold Weather Blasting..

I have so much work lined up but don't think my stuff is going to function very well in this 20* weather. I'm sure the aftercooler will help but I don't think it is going to be good enough to keep me from freezing up. Any thoughts?

Re: Cold Weather Blasting..

I'm in the same boat! December was around 30 the whole month and January been about the same, just with a lot of snow on the ground.

The problem is I'm still maybe 4 to 6 weeks out before I'm fully operational again.

So right now I'm working on the website as well as setting up my Facebook business pages with a lot of new business stuff as I go along.

Anyway it will be warm again shortly.

I have a building but its cold inside and out. Nothing I can do. I thought about running the unit and pot inside the building using the heat from the compressor to keep things from freezing up and running the hose out side. Thats my plan for tomorrow. we will see what happens.

Hi Guys,
I am blasting on two jobs in the cold right now.one is three tanks to be done inside and out-built an enclosure around them-propane heat at times.
Other is 1 million sq ft job no heat at all - 8 machines going nonstop!
Cheers Wes

Re: Cold Weather Blasting..

Hello again,
Almost forgot to say compressors make moisture ,it will cake up pot and things won't work below 20 degrees or so. I find a way to keep pot warm use warm air from the compressor radiator or heater focused on pot.

Re: Cold Weather Blasting..

i blasted a 55 chevy a couple weeks ago and as i was blasting my compressor would not rev up. (cold out) so i did some looking and everything was working ok just no rpms.
so, long story short, my aftercooler/air dryer outlet was frozen solid. bypassed it and worked the rest of the day no problem.
i too have a bunch of work that needs blasting. have had a steady stream of customers calling so business is picking up!!

Re: Cold Weather Blasting..

Blasted the other day and it was in the 20's. Wasted most of the day not making any money. Then figured out the dryer was half way frozen, only getting about 20-30 psi at pot. then thawed it out in shop and started working better but found media clogged in lower valve . I was glad that day was over....good thing im in Texas and dont have many days that cold

I was blasting today in my shop it was 2* nothing froze up. I'm not sure why I never have any freezing problems and I'm using a pneumatic deadman. I've been blasting all winter for 5 years without any problems.

Re: Cold Weather Blasting..

I blast all winter, if the work is there.
Some time by passing the after cooler works only if below 20
above 20, I run only one fan not two on the cooler, but the water trap clogs up. a screw driver in it every now and then keeps it cleaned out.

The heat on the pot and water trap next to it works. it keeps the moisture from freezing in the tank (pot)

Used a flex tube from my old job (12" x 7') hooked it to my hot air output on the compressor and through a tarp over the blast pot so the air would heat the pot. keeped it from freezing, but didn't look nice. but warm
