20k Sq Ft Concrete Floor, Needs Blast, Seal, Repair, Leveling And Polyurea

I have a floor job that I am putting a bid together for up here in the Dakotas. The floor is in an old manufacturing building that is being renovated to suit another purpose. The floor has several seperately poured slabs that the presses sat on. Each one of the pads need to be seem sealed and cracked sealed along with leveled with the rest of the concrete floor. The floor is covered in 40 years of grease, animal fats and metel shavings. I thought about dry iceing the floor but it would be to time consuming so now im thinking about blasting the floor with glass. Would blasting the floor completely clean it from the grease? Big job that would really spring me into the working season.

A floor like that really needs degreasing first, then thay would normally us a blastrac machine (Wheelabrator).

I really put alot of thought into degreasing then blast trac but the floor is very uneven and there are ALOT of holes and divets in the concrete and thought that a blastrac wouldn't work because of this. thoughts?

There is only one way to handle this. You do a test blast. Then it's up to them if it's clean enough to recoat or not. And you have some idea of the time and cost. Most important thing is that it is up to them to move forward and that is on paper. You can not be responsible for adhesion of any coating.

It is possible that some grease may get pushed into the flor from blasting. Soda is a very good degreaser but will cast more. I would try both and let them decide.

Before doing any test I would ask them the following. If The test blast is what you are looking for are you ready to start the next day or even the same day and do you currently have the funds available for a project of this size? If they are not ready to schedual I would have them call again when they are serious and ready to begin. It's nothing to them to waist your time doing a test when they know they only want to spend five or six thousand anyway.

You doing Polyurea BlastPro? Who's material are you thinking of using? If the floor is uneven and has a lot of divits then your going to loose a lot of shot with the BlastTrac. The floor still needs to be degreased. Blasting over the grease will just drive it into the concrete and you WILL have a coating failure. One surface prep that you can do is High Pressure Water jetting. Around 10-15,000 psi. You will still need to degrease though. For the coating to perform properly the surface prep will have to be done correctly of course. If you are doing polyurea, what spray equipment do you use?

Benny, thanks for taking the time to talk to me the other day. It looks as though we will be allowed to compete on this contract with the pressure wash, open air blast, concrete overlay and top coat of elastomeric self leveling epoxy. We have a product in mind that Sherwin Williams makes that will work very well for the coating. I have tried several degreasers in the past with mixed results. What would you recommend for degreasing the floor. We will be using 2 of our 4,000 psi washers with 195 degree water. We plan on presoaking then washing with a reclaim on the water for abatement. I don't want to use anything but the best for this one. Thanks again. If I owe you something on the advice just let me know, no problem paying for great advice. Maybe dinner and a beer at the least if I get into your region one day.

Not a problem BlastPro. On the Degreaser. One company that done a lot of degreasing used Krud Kutter. You can get it from Lowe's or Home Depot. If you check out your local Chemical Companies that deals with cleaning chemicals such as ZEP products you would probably get a better price buying is larger quanities. If you need someone on your project to help with getting set up with spraying the elastormeric just give me a call.
