Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

A lot of water leaking when handle is opened.

Cannot get through to Delta.

Only videos posted show the typical leak from spout or shower head.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

Drips from the handle are also caused by the cartridge? O-rings perhaps? It is located in an older condo and the water to the whole building needs to be shut down by the city.
I recently replaced a cartridge at another house where the shower head dripped. The new Danco still dripped. It took three weeks but Delta finally sent out a genuine Delta cartridge and it solved the problem. There are issues with their online Customer Service Form and call hold wait times are up to 90 minutes. The parts may be free but they make you work for them.

How many units is there? You can shut the water off unless it’s locked. Start knocking on doors & holler plumber here

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

There may be stops located on each side of the valve at a 45 deg angle, you can shut the water off there

There are 2 types of cartridges Delta makes, one with a v on the right side and one with a square on the right. Get authentic Delta Carts not the copies, get the whole cart with the part that goes way back in the valve which some call legs. Cart is $90 V type

The last oring lets water past it and the chrome retaining ring

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

Finally!
The local supply house said post or pre 2005. I found out the remodel was done in 2017. They then asked what model the valve body was and the owners found the paperwork. Based on that info, they sold me a RP46074.
The city utilities let me know where the manhole was located. Either they could do it for $20 or I could. I chose to do it as I could control the timing (I heard from an owner that in June, the water was to be off for two hours and was off for seven due to scheduling with the city worker).
Management sent out emails to all 42 units and I posted notices two days ago.
I arrived at 8 and was forced to remove tile to gain access to the the ring. It would not budge. I sprayed lubricant and grabbed a larger channel locks and was worrying the whole valve would twist and that we would have a major issue as the valve is located between two units. It eventually loosened and the new cartridge (RP46074...$61) would not seat. I pulled it out and saw that the legs were too long. I ran to Ace and purchased a RP19804 ($53) which fit perfectly.
Now I know to keep one of each with me at all times. I am taking the time to post this so as to help all those non-plumbers out there. It took me 28 years to learn this lesson.
Maybe 5 hours spent on a 30 minute job.

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

Very obvious cracks in the plastic around the stem caused the water to leak out from below the handle every time it was in the on position.
A little horse-play in the shower, perhaps?

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

Sounds like it might not have been possible in this case but like auto parts, I take the part to the plumbing supply house for the right part. If water was off 7 hours in the other case you could have turned water off, pulled part & done couple of hours tops. There is a tool to turn water off. Removing tile sounds like a maintenance mans handy work. Glad you got er done

Re: Delta Shower Leaking From Handle

In retrospect, I should have done what you said and taken the part to the store as it would have saved a lot of time and hassle.

Interesting thread!

I'll have to remember not to buy a condo where the entire building has to be shut down to work on the tub/shower fixture.
