1” AquaPEX Through Ceiling Joists

Hey Gang,

I’m running a 1” cold water Pex line through a basement ceiling to replace a buried, sediment clogged galvanized supply. The basement is going to be a livable space (not drop ceiling).

What size hole should I bore in the joists? Should I worry about expansion noise and plan a larger hole accordingly?

Thanks much,

I would use the 1" tubing insulators which use a 1 3/8 hole if it was me.

Re: 1” AquaPEX Through Ceiling Joists

That is an interesting question. I don't have an answer.

Aren't you glad I replied to this.

My point: I have been to more than one house, where they complain about the copper noise. The copper pipes expand and contract as the hot water goes through them.

Personally, I like Pex. I would say, drill the hole a little larger and go with it. It may make noise, but only time will tell.

Agree with Randy - no muss, no noise, nice clean install and next to no $'s to do it.

Aren’t there provisions for an expansion loop after a long length?
