Wrought Iron Railing

Working on a little wrought iron rail for mom's front patio step and I figured I'd show you a pretty common type we use around here.

It doesn't get any more basic,...1" solid bar post, rail cap stock, solid 1/2" spindles and solid 3/8" x 1" bar for the bottom rail.

An old time friend of mine who recently passed at 80, did iron work all his life and was a true master. He'd take these 1" bars and twist them into a candy cane on a huge machine he built for the sole purpose...only one in town that did it. His rail cap returns was his trademark, he called them lambs tongue and nobody matched it.

As I said this is low budget, basic work, but it will serve it's purpose of being durable, dependable and low maintenance.

Powder coat would be ideal...this is just getting rustoleum primer and top coat in white...normally I'll do them black.

If he's really an "ass" inspector, shouldn't he be inspecting asses instead of rails?

I did that on purpose to snag the Jehovah's to prevent them from soliciting your honor

Man, my core bit is missing some teeth...no matter, still chomps through like a champ.

You can probably jam a basketball under my bottom rail as well...it's like I'm a serial code violator

I set it right at 34"...At least I got one thing right.

Probably build another one to extend out to the driveway step...easy enough to use the existing bottom post to field weld an extension rail.

That pink pig needs an upgrade as well

Come to think of it, my parents old neighbor had handrails that looked just like that...
