What I Hate At The Paint Store

I thought it a good topic. Opened up a can of exterior and it was lumpy, My theory is there was a bunch of dried paint on the lid inside. It sure would be nice if they would scrape it off before putting it in the shaker at least look for it being it's last years stock.

All paint has to be strained now, I think the paint companies have cheapened their process by eliminating straining.
I told our paint rep they need to give out free strainers instead of stir sticks. He was not amussed but he knew I was right.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

OK a plastic can, I get, but the metal tin shouldn't be that way. Give out strainers, they should strain it for me, they shake paint for me don't they ? Guess we shouldn't be so picky, next thing you know they won't even bother to get the right color.

When Sherwin-Williams has their "30% off summer sale" (like right now), it's only for new customers and my discount happens to be less.

Its the grinding process during paint manufacturing that makes or breaks paint quality in this regard.

Yeah there's another beef, tormenting the contractor because he hasn't used that particular store lately. I mean you give them a second chance to sell you paint and they lay on a guilt trip and then mix your paint especially wrong just to rub it in. Like I don't want to drive the extra two miles and suffer ten stoplights.. Sherwin has too draw more residential customers, and yet yet they really haven't unlocked the reason people don't come I hoards, price isn't everything, make the product selection less mystifying, How can you have three interior finish lines that are so similar in price but no particular difference in quality. A stand up comedian could have segment based soley on their product line.. Remember GM when they had Pontiac, and buick and gmc and well you get the picture.

We've noticed this a lot more with our paint also. It has become first nature to strain our paint first before we even do anything with it.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

I had that issue on my last job. Used glidden promar 150. Had a bunch of boogers each time I dipped the roller. It really slowed me down. I knew it wasn't my gear as I use all new every job. Of the 3 buckets only 2 had globs in it though. Very frustrating indeed.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

I third the price for the price for the sherwin william paint. HO picked Sherwin Williams paint once and the thing was more bloody expensive then what I normally buy BM or BEHR for and I didn't find it to be anything spectacular.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

When I pick up 5's for spraying the next day (especially stock colors in 5's) I have them put them on the mixer for twice the normal mixing time. The bubbles created disperse overnight.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

I also hate that they can't keep supplies. Even though I tell them to order an extra case. And no, I'm not paying for a special order.

How a paint store is ALWAYS outta roller pans is beyond me. Sheesh

Paint companies seem to be grinding the solids in their paints less now. I heard there used to be multiple grinding cycles used, but paint manufacturing companies removed a grinding cycle to save money. They still grind it fine enough for most painting applications, but airless painters can notice the change. Tips wear out faster, too.

I'm guilty of spraying a 5 or two (ha!...more) without straining the paint. I seldom get any gun clogs ( I use Filter Boss spacers), but I'm sure it lessens the life of my airless packings, and tips.

I told my SW rep the same thing. He called the store and they gave me the discount on Emerald interior.
First time using Emerald interior.

Re: What I Hate At The Paint Store

Good luck with the emerald interior, last time was a nuisance dark eggshell that for some reason appeared patchy, miscolored, Ok maybe it was bad luck but switching brands helped substantially. I try I try to encourage that I pick the specific brand but there's always that slip and sure enough it's double time. You know what I hate about the paint store,,,,, No spray equipment, I can't get much anything off the shelf, but tips and spray guards only,, I buy compulsively I prefer a hands on approach not special order, and I could understand if I lived in the country. Do they really want me to roll it on ?
