Staining A New Fiberglass Door

Is there any special requirements for stainig a new fiberglass door? It will be supplied "stain grade" and it will be textured. The owners wants it to look like a wood door. Is there a special stain that should be used?

Thanks for any input.

you have to use a gel stain. nice thing about it is if you screw it up. laquer thinner erases it all and start all over.. have to work fast tho.

ThermaTru makes stain kits for their doors. The newer version is called the One Day system. We've done a handful of them with it and it seems a lot quicker.

Previously, we use their older kits, gel stains, or made our own stains with artists' oil colors.

I stained my own fiberglass front door years ago. Stained it just like wood and finished with an exterior polyurethane, came out very nice and still looks nice.

I don't like staining fiberglass doors on site. I always order them prefinished.

I didn't realize that was a possibility. What mfg?

We stain and finish them in the the shop, so we can control the conditions.
