Primer And Paints Help

So, I bought a house. It's 3 years old. remodeled by a contractor. they used contractor grade paint "whatever that means" Sherwin W's No VOC.
Unfortunately, I cant stand the smell in the house every time I walk in. fortunately, my nose only smells it for about 5 secs and then I can't tell anymore.
numerous friends have said its only the new paint smell but I have never smelled paint last over a month.
So I realize if i'm gonna rid this smell I need to paint the whole house.
What I cant decide on is if I should prime first then paint or use a paint and primer in one?
I want to do it right the first time. My other wonder is to decide which primer to use and which paint company to go with. whats important is the smell dissipates asap.

I would like some suggestions on primers to use and paints. I have done some minor reading and seams like valspar or Behr would be good. but I'd like to hear form the pros.
