Box Beams ... excessive or just fine

Talked with a new steel sub recently ...
Specified that I wanted box beams on a particular pool

he said ... "sure Dirt ... I'd be happy to ... but you don't need them and I think it would be a waste of your money"

(Note - only a difference of about 12" in finish grade to present. In other words ... not much clean fill .... clay soils)

I went on to say "well this is what I'm comfortable with and what I was taught" etc etc etc.

He chuckled and gave me a list of engineers to call

alright pool guys ... debate ...

project hasn't started yet ....

i really see no reason for that beam unless it is a gutter surge system,
other wise a 7 iron beam is fine

honestly, i don't either ... especially if it there is such a high clearance of distance between the finish grade and virgin soil (i.e. filled with good dirt and not clay)

at the same time, it's the way im accustomed to ... and kinda hard to get away from it...

i haven't seen scientific proof whether it is better or not
