Range Hood Required For Elec Range?

I'm trying to find out if a range hood or any means of exhaust is actually required for an electric range/ oven in a kitchen. I've looked in the 2009 Codebook, and haven't found the direct answer yet. It states what kind of piping to use for ductwork and that it has to be vented outdoors, but I haven't found where it says if its required. I'm assuming its required, but I would like to know for sure.

Thanks

IRC does not require venting. If you do vent then it has to be vented to the outdoors unless manufacture allows its appliance to be ductless

Is it not required just for electric? Or gas as well?

Not required for any type of range. However, your local code could require it. Best to check with your AHJ.

How about a OTR with charcoal filters, that does not vent to the ext, Of course the filter is for the cook top and not the micro

Re: Range Hood Required For Elec Range?

I recently installed a otr microwave under a 30x30 cabinet, so it comes down 46" from the ceiling. Usually I do it under a 30x24 cabinet, but some short people aren't comfortable with a hot cup of coffee up high in the air.

I think I missed the manufacturer's rec'd min height above the range by an inch. It will be interesting to see if the exhaust comes on automatically a lot.

I checked it a bit and all cooking can be done in that height alright, but it does look 6" below normal of course.

Also, pull the specs on the range itself. Depending on the manufacturer, sometimes they will have some comments on any venting required for that particular unit. I seem to recall that when I've needed to check, it's somewhere around page 10-20 where they show clearances above the range.

If it dosen't come with a vent, then you don't need one in a residential setting.
