How To Flange

I'm tiling a bathroom floor. I'm putting 1/4" hardi backer down first. Does the rim of the toilet flange drain have to sit on top of the tile or do I screw it into the HB sub floor and tile up to the edge of it. If I tile up to the edge of it does that leave the flange to flush with the floor to get a good seal with the toilet?

Re: How To Flange

1/4 to 1/2 above or below the finished floor can be dealt with simply by the size of the wax ring you buy.Ideally the flange should be flush with finished floor. Almost always we end up with the flange 1/4 below finish level.
