Caulking Shower Method

Would like some help here. I researched some past threads but couldn't find the exact answer I'm looking for concerning caulking.

Another contractor I know swears by grouting the corners of a shower, then running a bead of clear silicone over the top of that. He says it gives you the silicone protection, yet allows the grout color to show through the clear silicone. Has anyone used this method and if so does it work?

Re: Caulking Shower Method

The problem I have with that is while it looks great at first the silicone usually discolors in a few months of use or allows mildew to develop quicker. I have even tried the "Marine" stuff that supposedly is resistant to mildew and still had that problem.

This guy did say he uses K&B silicone that should help. But I see your point. Especially if you've tried the marine silicone.

That method often leads to a hairline crack under the silicone.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

I don't use clear silcone any where if I can help it. Like Lug said it looks great for a minute and then looks cloudy and yellows over time.

I prefer Mapei Keracaulk-S or Mapesil. Mapesil is so great to work with. There are cross reference charts if you need to match another manufacturers color.

There are those that just grout the corners and walk. John Bridge is one. The belief is if you build your shower for no movement you don't need caulk on the plane changes. I live by the rule that all plane changes get caulk.

Exactly. You have created a window to see the cracking grout beneath.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

In researching threads from a couple of years ago I ran across a post about Color Rite and a product called Color Sill which is 100% RTV silicone. They now have a product called Grout Caulk that is also 100% RTV silicone and comes in sanded and satin finishes. Have you guys used any of this.
Thanks for the info on the discoloring. I also agree on the grout cracking part. Even if it doesn't leak and stays clear you will see the cracking grout underneath.

I cut my tile laying teeth on the John Bridges stuff, but I agree,
I wouldn't feel comfortable not caulking a corner in a shower. Drives me nuts when standing at the urinal in a restaurant, and look at the corners. Every one is cracked every time. Now that I think about it, how bad is that to be away from work and still checking out the other guys work in the bathroom.
I'll also check out the Mapei products as well.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

Honestly I have never heard of that stuff either man. Just am getting back in the game after 8 years out of it and finding out there are ALL kinds of advancements that have been made in that time span. Will be interested in seeing some of the other guys take on it though.

As for checking out the work of others... I am guilty of that all the time myself. I can't believe some of the crap work that is being done in Commercial settings..

Color Rite is good stuff, but ordering a couple tubes is expensive. Also their color match is not good. This is QL 2 and Color Rite's match. When I sent them this pic, they really didn't care, so I only used them once.

Mapei or Laticrete silicone is just as good quality and color match wise but easier(at least for me) to get.

Yeah, that color match there reminds me of how bad Sherwin Williams was at color matching before they got the computer matching stuff

Re: Caulking Shower Method

I don't see why you'd bother. You'd most likely end up looking at a cracked grout joint with dirty silicone over it. Better to get a 100% silicone match. I have a few test areas out there with urethane and Flexcolor grouted corners and I haven't had any cracking yet. I don't like Flexcolor for showers so it's kind of a moot point but the urethane appears to able to absorb a fair amount of seasonal plane change.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

I just color match caulk it with 100% silicone as pretty much everyone else has said. We have a place here that literally has hundreds of colors so I'm close enough.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

I try to leave an eighth inch gap on my shower inside corners.
I then mask the tile off and fill the gap with color match silicone.
Then strike it off flush with a square edge laminate sample then pull the tape. Caulking over the grout with clear silicone to me, would look like the grout cracked and then someone tried to fix it with caulking.

Way too much gap, IMO. I use a wedge to space my corners. Maybe a 32th of an inch, at the most 1/16th, but that even drives me crazy. Any gaps get filled with grout and then a small bead of grout caulk to cover the corner.

Clear silicone over grout? That's like putting turd in a display case.

Minimum grout joint between planes and flexible grout caulk - that's how I roll.

Re: Caulking Shower Method

Thanks for all the input Looks like color Rite may not be the answer. I'm going to look into the Mapei products at this point.
