Best Method Of Filling Dip In Floor

I know this is kind of a rookie question, but what the heck...

I have a decent size floor to tile, about 300 sf or so, and there is a dip in one spot. About 5x5 or so. Over an inch deep in the deepest spot.

I don't want or need to use an SLC over the entire floor, because it isn't needed.

I've mixed up what someone called a "deck mud" before, and filled beneath the backed board. I've also troweled on a thicker layer of thinset over the backer board before. Both methods worked OK I guess. I haven't seen anything wrong with them. I've also put a thick layer of thinset under the Hardi-Backer before.

I thought about installing backerboard over the floor, except in the spot where I need to fill, and fill that with SLC.

Is there a best method for this situation?

Thanks, guys.

I would prefill the low spot the day before, and screed it off. (if same day, maybe speedset early) Then no fiddling when you comb out thinset for backerboard.

Re: Best Method Of Filling Dip In Floor

That's what I was thinking of doing, filling it with thinset before, but I'm concerned about it fracturing when I nail down the backer board.

Hence I started thinking about going over the top of the board.

How about screwing that area with self-drillers, like GRK's?

But I'll bet no screws would be just fine there (as long as it's bedded in fresh thinset)

SLC in that area. Two pours. Predrill holes for screws (2"). Thinset down and go. I would not skip the screws in that area. The thinset bond breaks after a fews years and really isn't designed as a bond, but a filler.

I always nail backer board.

Probably no chance of doing that over an SLC?

You can try. I just don't know how well it will nail through the SLC (your concern as well). You could predrill the nail holes.

I've had no problem nailing through SLC but you need longer nails in that area.

Planipatch from Mapei. You can screed it and it is workable un like thinset, We use it to fill in spots.

And it can be as thick as 1" in a single application.

Re: Best Method Of Filling Dip In Floor

So what, if any, is the downside to floating thinset over the backer board, and letting it set up for a day?

As long as the board is bedded in thinset before you float over it, should be fine.

Nothing other than being a PITA to get flat and uniform. My tile guy does it all the time, pre fill day before with thinset and then tile next day. I like planipatch as it it tileable same day and very easy to work with.

Why would it matter? The leveler is to fill the void. The crack shouldn't affect anything above it. Remember, the Romans laid tile on sand and it has lasted a very long time.

Depending on how thick your float was you would need to use medium set, not thinset.

This has been very helpful.

Thanks all for taking the time to give advice.

I'll checkout that planipatch product.
