Residential Contractors License In Florida

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum and have been looking for info on getting licensed as a residential contractor in the state of Florida. I've browsed the site a bit and found some older posts regarding this, but thought I would introduce myself and see if anyone had some input on the subject.
I currently own a small construction business near Buffalo,NY. I do primarily residential remodeling and have no employees. I am looking to relocate to South Florida and do the same thing.
From what I understand, I would be required to get a residential contractors license in which case I have to take the business finance, contract administration and trade knowledge exams. I've been getting all my information off the myfloridalicense.com website. But it seems a little confusing and I just wanna make sure I'm doing the right things
I also found the list of books that you are able to bring in and was curious as to how important it would be to have the latest editions.
Any help or info on any of this would be great appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Residential Contractors License In Florida

First off welcome to CT, we have a member here Lisa Adams and she is the go to person to help you in becoming a licensed contractor here in Fl.

You will need the books, you will need to show/prove at least 4 years of experience or some collage Lisa can help also finger prints, credit report.

All you need to take the test is to be of good moral character and at least 18 years old, contracting in FL with out a license is a crime its a crime to put on your business card licensed if you are not.

In FL if you have a license it has to be on all paper work and on your work truck.

Lisa is your girl she knows how the game is played and the rules, best of luck.

Thanks a lot for the response. I saw some older posts that Lisa had responded to and tried to PM her, but it wouldn't let me for some reason. I will try and contact her again. Thanks again!

Welcome.
Sunkist coved most of it.
To answer a little more, youíll want the latest addition of the books. You donít want to answer the question wrong due to having an older book. I do recommend taking a prep class before taking the exams.

Iím going to guess you donít have enough post to PM someone yet, so jump in some conversations and have some fun around here.

Hello all and thank you for your patience! I was out on maternity leave and just got back!

FYI: The site does not allow for private messaging until you have made a few posts. This is to stop someone from becoming a member and then spamming everyone with private messages trying to sell services.

In regards to getting the license, yes those requirements are all accurate, but the biggest thing you want to make sure of is that you have the right kind of experience.

Do you have any college or military service in your history? This can reduce the requirements.

Otherwise, you need four years. Some of that can be "remodel" work, but most needs to be "new". New can mean:
* Brand new structure from the ground up
* Additions to structures
* Rebuilds of fully or partially demolished structures.

Does that sound like the type of work you can provide?

Re: Residential Contractors License In Florida

Thanks a lot for the reply Lisa! As for experience, I have a bachelor's degree in business finance as well as 15 years doing residential construction. I worked for my father from the time I graduated from college until he passed away in 2015. I then took over the business.
Together my father and I built about 5 houses from top to bottom as well as several large additions and basic remodeling. All jobs were done with very little use of subcontractors only for concrete and sometime insulation.
Since I've taken over the business, ive had to scale back a little because it's only me now, but still have done a couple good size additions and large remodels.
What kind of proof for this experience do they usually require?
Thanks!
