NJ Licensing Question

Hello,

I will be constructing freestanding garages and attached garage renovation. After spending several hours researching NJ requirements, I cannot figure out what licensing will be needed.

Do I need just a GC license or a "Home builders" license, or both?

If someone can point me in the right direction - much appreciated!

Re: NJ Licensing Question

Thanks Bull. But that site seems to pertain to those who offer "financed home repair"

I'm not financing anything, just wondering what licenses NJ requires to construct detached garages, or, renovate existing garages.

I have researched all of the sites (including the link you sent) for hours and can't get my head around what is actually needed.

So, I came to this forum looking for someone who 'knows' for sure as again, the web links on the NJ portal are a disaster

You list your trade as GC... Were you born yesterday to ask if and what license you need?

That's another one that pisses me off.
I pay for one as well. When I sold my other truck I needed a new sticker and still had a year and a half to go before renewal. They would not send me a new decal they insisted I pay them a fresh fee.
Then I bitched about it and said at least rent at least add to the time frame of the renewal. They said no.

To further add to my aggravation when I went to the dumps I did not stick the decal on my truck yet and the scale master told me to come back after 2 for homeowners.

So now I'm saying to myself I'm paying money to the state to have this sticker for my convenience but you let anybody come here after 2 or on weekends. WTF

Re: NJ Licensing Question

Like I said, there are 3 (THREE) different licenses to apply for. Wondering if anyone has any clue before I call them, so that they don't talk me into unnecessarily applying for a license I DO NOT NEED. Regulators have a way of pushing for OVERKILL with everything. I recently had a zoning officer try to to convince me that I needed to apply for a building permit for a 1' tall x 10' long fieldstone wall!

I know where all the state links are, and I have read everything I could find. But, it appears that the state is telling me I need ALL THREE licenses to build FREESTANDING GARAGES.

So, excluding the link sharing and sarcasm, does anyone have any REAL CLUE what licenses I will be REQUIRED to have?

Here is what I am looking at from the STATE SITE::::::::::::::::::::::

There is no state licensing board for the General Contractor, HomeBuilder and Home Improvement Contractor. However, there is a state registration program.

To register for the Home Builders license you need to contact the New Jersey Dept. of Community Affairs, Building Registration Division, phone : 609-984-7563. You must submit a completed application. The license fee is $200.

To register for the Home Improvement License, you must submit a completed application; proof of $500,000 in liability insurance and proof of a state registered business name. The license fee is $90.
Contact Information:
New Jersey Consumer Affairs
124 Halsey Street
Newark, NJ 07102
973-504-6200

Licensing for General Contractor (Commercial Construction) is done on the city or county level. You need to contact your city of county officials for an application.
::::::::::::::::::

Anyone?

Re: NJ Licensing Question

For the time being get the home improvement license and build a garage.
I can see how you met qualify as a home builder but there is far less to warranty with the garage than a house so I would play stupid for now.

Re: NJ Licensing Question

I working in different towns and have no idea what roadblocks I might run into if I just get my GC license.

Plus, what if they want a warranty on the garage? Don;t I need HomeBuilder for that?

Just call the DCA and get all of your answers, they even answer the phone. Strange for a government office
