Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

I've got two questions. First is my HIC is up soon and I can't find a damn thing on the "Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation" about the process of renewing the license other than it is $100. No form to download nothing. I've tried calling them, and have not heard back. has anyone renewed theirs recently that could enlighten me to the procedure? Thanks. 2nd. Does anyone know the skinny about CSL continuing education requirements for renewing that licencse? Mass is not doing a damn thing to help us out with the procedures. Thanks, Nick.

Re: Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

There are a couple other recent threads on the CSL education issue look for those.

In short,if your last renewal was was after July 1st, 2011 you need to start taking courses for your renewal in 2013. If it was before July 2011, the edu. req. starts after your next renewal

ex My lic last exp June 2011, I dont need CEU's credits until renewal in June 2015

HIC renewal is mailed, They have eliminated the Fee excemption for CSL holder with no employees. So it is a minimum $100 renewal paid by Money order or Bank Check.

There is a renewal link on this page

It is a pain because they keep moving and changing everything. I actually just sent my CSL renewal in today.

I am also looking for more info.
I do not do much work in MA anymore and have been thinking of not renewing. Mine expires in 4/5/2012 and was under the impression that I needed the continuing education, although I have heard nothing from the state. Are you saying I will not need them until my next renewal?

Thanks for any info.

I wouldn't let it expire. To retake the test is such a PIA. Just keep it. It's prob worth it in the long run.

You will not need the CEU's for this renewal, but will for 2014.

I know NH has not had the same licence requirements in the past, but are they headed in that direction? and would you need schooling for that. If you did, keeping the MA CSL current would be smart as Morning Wood said.

You would get to write off any courses you take so in the end it won't cost a ton of money.

Thanks for the info on the renewal.

The licensing is still a big fight up here between the State of NH and the HBRA (Home Builders Remodelers Association).
The State seems to want to issue licenses just to be able to raise money then pull them for a sort of punishment. (pay a fee, get a license)
The Home Builders want to have a True License where it has meaning, testing and value, not just something that is paid for.

It will be a long time before anything is done on this issue I believe.

I would like to think if I or anyone has a Mass license, and NH started a license program, the Mass license would be valid and take precedents

Re: Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

Ok. So my license expires on 8/10/2013. If the renewal period is two years (or is it three) than I must have to do the continuing education. I can't remember when I got my license. My brain is toast.

Re: Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

Just came across this. I got my license in 2010 I'm pretty sure. So, they gave me a three year till renewal. Seems like I don't have to do continuing ed till I renew in 2015. I guess? Yippee.

I recall reading about some new "on line" system the State of MA has put into place for license renewal, but they were having issues with it, that was back in November.
So, the email they sent you with attachment didn't work? Feel like forwarding it to me?

I recall reading about some new "on line" system the State of MA has put into place for license renewal, but they were having issues with it, that was back in November. The email message had a file with the following contents in it:

"Error accessing Microsoft Word at msw_process line 189: Word was unable to open the data source."

I recall a lot of the MA state web sites use files in MS word format for information...
This is strange...I got the same message on 2/24...

Looks like the Commonwealth still has their stuff together....

I thought, maybe, it's because I'm all Apple and could be an issue, I got my sons PC, nope, same deal.....

Re: Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

When I went to renew my HIC license last summer I went to City Hall, then re-routed, then even to the library. Found an address to a place on Medford Street in Boston and finally landed right side up.
Had to pay the Commonwealth a boatload in back dues for not renewing the 3 years I operated out of Union County, NC.
Plus fill out all necessary paperwork and make payment on a reinstatement fee.
Contracting for home improvement projects is not for the faint of heart.

Re: Massachusetts Licensing Renewal Questions

I sent in my renewal on March 6th and haven't seen anything in the mail as of today. I used to get my renewal within 2 weeks including the last one in 2010.

I've had it since 1985 and have built at least 20 single family homes and probably 50 additions.

I no longer build full time. I buy old houses and and fix them up for rental property so I still keep the license current in case I need it.

6 to 8 weeks is ridiculous and shows how seriously the State is screwed up. Don't you just love that sh_t eating grin on Deval Patrick's face along with the mind numbing radial speak?

As a note to newbies you can let your license run out at which time it becomes void, you then have one year grace period to renew from that date or you have to retake the test. Many times over the last ten years or so I have let it run as I didn't need it....... as long as you send it in within the grace period you are all set.

I don't know what is going to happen with cont ed...which I do think is a very good thing.....it should weed out a significant percentage of license holders that just send in the money.....the state will probably make that up by charging Cont Ed course providers a fee to be "Officially recognized".....those should start popping up like weeds soon enough.
