Installing Exhaust Fan Into Short Space...

I've got a ~ 6" square duct that I need to fit an exhaust into. The duct runs vertically for 3 1/4" before it starts to turn 90 degrees.

I was going to install the Broan 673 vertical discharge fan into the duct but with the air damper blades extended the fan has a total vertical height of 7". Plus the electrical connections are on the lower half of the fan.

A not so desirable alternative is to build a custom plywood box and have the lower half recess into the bathroom.

I'd prefer to spend the money and get an out of the box solution.

Thoughts?

Maybe something along these lines, where the fan unit is not at the ceiling but down along the ducting somewhere

That was just an example of an inline fan, sure they have single duct designs also.

Re: Installing Exhaust Fan Into Short Space...

Finally got around to working on this project.

I peeked into the space where my vent enters the main duct by removing a light fixture.

Any ideas on how to cleanly adapt a 90 degree elbow to fit my vertical fan?

Maybe a taller 90 degree elbow?

Then you likely don't need one. There's a fan on top of the building.

I’m on the top 2 floors. I have the 4th and 5th floor. This fan is for the fourth floor. It definitely needs ventilation as the air is so stale.

Your screen name says you're a plumber, yet you list your trade as HVAC.

So which is it? Seems like even a plumber should be able to solve this on his own, let alone a HVAC guy...

Re: Installing Exhaust Fan Into Short Space...

I was getting confused by his multiple "how do I?" tile postings when I found one in the plumbing section about glass. It was on a job for his girlfriend and turns out a lot of his posts are "how do I?" posts about bathroom work involving plumbing/tile...and here, hvac.
I didn't realize that until I looked at his post history to find where you moved that shower glass subject and saw all of his posts were questions and I'd not be surprised that's all he's done here, start threads with questions.
