Heart Attack Coming?

OK I donít like going to the doctors, so here goes. I work in the field part time and when I do its helping do some minor cleanup, drop off materials or some trim work. I like to think Iím in good shape, not over weight and will soon be 48. Now I do work out to keep myself in some type of good condition (probably not enough), weight lifting on muscles I donít always use and a rowing machine for 45 minutes every 2-3 days depending. Whenever I have a harder physical day (framing or tear out etc) I feel very wiped out, I swear I think Iím going to have a heart attack tired. Have any of you experienced this? I donít know if this is an aging thing? I remember like 4-5 years ago and I was still more or less doing the same thing not feeling this spent after wards. Anyone else experiencing anything like this? I'll admit I fit the criteria of a workaholic.

48, yep, you're getting older. I just hit 49 and feel the same way some days. I've gone to just working 6 or 7 hours a day normally. I seem to get more done, and feel a lot better. Start late, end early is my new credo.

Re: Heart Attack Coming?

Not to make it too dramatic, but you may not like going to the doctors, but it's probably a safe bet you would hate going to the morgue more...

While lots of things happen as we get older (and take you by surprise and for the most part suck) such as you're describing, you're at that age when they develop a base-line of current and future heath risks though some tests. The tests are a heck of a lot cheaper than a heart attack/surgery... tiredness, tightness in the chest where you feel like you're having a heart attack and shortness of breath during or after exertion are some tell-tale signs...

You're guts telling you something... I'd encourage you to listen to it and not ignore it and get an experts opinion kinda like we tell our clients...

Hope it ends up being you're just getting older like the rest of us...

I probably need more sleep for sure. I work 70 hours a week, roughly 20-30 in the field the rest office or traveling to job sites.

I'm 67, and I've started feeling that way over the last year or two. To put it bluntly, you're way too young for that.

Key question: Do you enjoy your work? If you hate it, feel trapped in it, or just have other things weighing heavily on your mind, the whole thing could be psychological. That doesn't diminish the effect at all, but it could be a reason other than just physical degeneration.

True, but you are an animal. The rest of us are mere humans.

Re: Heart Attack Coming?

Any time I feel terrible I drink 40 or 50 oz of water in an hour or so and than see how things go. I find that most of the time I just need to rehydrate. When that doesn't work I try coffee. If neither of those beverages can take care of it, there is yet another option.

I am only in my thirties so it's probably not the same, but I really think that until you are fully hydrated it's hard to tell how tired you are or are not.

True... they don't care about the destination but the journey on the way there because it's too late and they didn't get checked out when it could have made the difference...

Re: Heart Attack Coming?

There are so many ways a day of physical labor can wipe you out when you're 48 (or older) it isn't funny.

For starters, you can't coast on your youthful hormone levels and quick recovery, plus a higher base level of fitness.

If you have a vague feeling of impending doom, there's a good chance you're ready for a massive heart attack or have an emotional issue.

Most of us are self employed. I thought a sense of impending doom was part of the gig.

This week I have been feeling my age a ton. I spent the day slacking in bed watching movies on Sunday. Sunday afternoon I got up to go out to eat and could barely walk. Monday I was so wedged up I could barely make it to the front door to let the dogs out. Tuesday I stayed home and the only thing that relieved the pain was laying down curling my back, OK, laying in the fetal position.

Had to work Wednesday and muddled though a day of drywall and mudding. I was thankful the heavy work was done. Today I put in about 5 hours skim coating and it was all I could do. If I stopped for even a minute break, it got harder.

Moral of the story... don't spend the day in bed, unless you are exercising.

Tomorrow I am working, as well as the next week and a half straight it looks like.

Gettin' old sucks.

Re: Heart Attack Coming?

I'm In the exact same boat at 46. Several years ago I worked many many many hours building up a quick retirement only for my ex to spend it all at the casino in a period of three months behind my back. No here I am doing it again. I've always been physical via mountain biking or riding my bmx bike at the skate park but I haven't had much time for it the past couple of years. But I am finding that the pains in my body in various places all over are literally ten times worse than they were three years ago. It sucks . I'm thinking of getting a physical myself
My son is a BMX racer and the other day there was a seventy year old racing. Crazy!

Depends on what you want your business to be like I imagine. I envy your model and can see it's benefits, but I doubt most larger businesses were built on 8 he work days. At least at first

I knew early on I didn't have what it took to run a large business. Never dealt with stress well. I always wanted to be the guy who made 40% of 5-600k over the guy who made 10% of 2 mil. Simpler life.
