LED Under Cabinet Lighting

Hi,

I am a kitchen subcontractor. On the kitchen that I am finishing up, I installed a LED tape light from Commercial Electric. When I used this product before, all of the cabinets were at the same height and I was able to run continuous lighting by drilling a hole along the bottom of the cabinets

However on this kitchen none of the cabinets except 2 are at the same height. So I thought that I could connect each cabinet light to the rest of them using wire. That is connected together on the top of the cabinets and then run to each light.

I am finding that the first 2 cabinets will light but the last 2 won't. I checked voltage and polarity and they both seem right. I suspect there is too much resistance but don't know enough not have a meter to test that.

Does anyone think that's what it could be? Could I get a more powerful power supply to solve the problem?

See the attached photos. Thanks

Kevin Johnson

Something isn't connected properly. Are the LEDs cut at the proper length? There are specific areas you can cut them, if you don't do they they won't work or might even blow a few out from over voltage across them. Usually 12v LEDs are cut every third LED and 24v are cut every 6th.

Re: LED Under Cabinet Lighting

Without knowing the wattage of the strips, we can't say if the power supply is large enough.

When it comes to polarity, you can't just say "left is -, right is +"..... it depends on which end you're looking at.

Re: LED Under Cabinet Lighting

Half the strips wouldn't light if the power supply was under powered. It would overload and shut down. It might make the lights flash as it came on, realized the overload and shut down. Rinse and repeat.

I used the OPs photo to emphasis what you said. That's all. Carry on.

Ok, I am jumping back in here to thank everyone and tell you what the problem was. It was one the connector.

I think if I use this lighting with the tape again I need to find a supply of connectors (not just the ones in the box) or a more robust tape lighting kit.

I quit using field connectors years ago. I now solder the wiring directly onto the tape. It's a pain, but eliminates this problem altogether.

Ditto. I find any of those connects mediocre at best. Soldering them makes it nearly impossible for the connection to go bad. Don't overheat them. Small 50 watt iron with rosin core solder.
