What Pressure Washer Do You Guys Use For Decks And Fences?

I'm about to buy a pressure washer and I'm wondering if I need a contractor grade power washer or if a decent standard one will do. I need the pressure washer for stripping/cleaning decks and stripping fences. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I would never use a power washer on any deck.

Get something decent if you are gonna use it a lot. If it's only gonna be once or twice a week just get a model from lowes in the 2800+psi range with more than 2.5gpm

I wouldn't ever not use one. I have tried doing it without a pressure washer a couple of times but it came out crap compared to pressure washing.

Here's me putting stain on the day after pressure washing.

I've got a Honda 2600psi. I would also not do it with it pressure washing.

I've pressure washed every deck I've ever worked on. In fact, I'm not sure how one could properly refinish a deck without one.

The concept is flawed.

forcing water into the wood is fundamentally- working in reverse by adding the very thing that later will be guarded against.

I think the concept is forcing dirt out using water. Works faster and better than scrubbing in my limited experience, but you have to wait for it to dry and you can damage wood if not careful.

I was asking about pressure washers, not whether or not to use them on decks.

You can use up to 3000 psi on some composites

J .

Your not forcing water into the wood though. It's noting like putting the material into a pressure chamber and putting it under 3000psi.

My deck was back to the same moisture content after 4-5hrs in the sun but I left it till the next morning to apply. It's how I have done every deck since using TWP. In fact they highly recommended using a pressure washer as it better removes the oxidization than scrubbing alone and it also cleans and opens up the woods pores to allow the oil to better be absorbed.

So upto yet

You say - Don't pressure wash
TWP say - Do pressure wash

You say - Apply sealer straight away
TWP say - Wait 4-12months

You say - Build a Film for a gloss look
TWP say - Do not build a film for a gloss look

You say - No to Build layers
TWP says - You can build layers

Your right on the first two wrong on the second two.

I did build coats to a gloss but warned against others doing it

I did not say anything about not building coats that, of course, I would have to do to get a gloss.

I am in conflict with the recommendations offered by the twp can because I have done the exact opposite and found it worked.

I also found a floor machine/pad worked better than using a power washer.

On a thread the other week you said something about having to strip before building coats. That's not the case. I'm not taking about building them to a gloss. That's a different thing. building with a oil to a gloss is not recommended because it builds a film and does not penetrate. The film is prone to flaking because it's not penetrated into the material it's just a film of oil on the surface. That's one reason they say wait 9months before adding another top up coat.

Then you aren't using the pressure washer correctly. Acceptable moisture readings will return with a day or two.

Re: What Pressure Washer Do You Guys Use For Decks And Fences?

I have a 4000 psi / 4gpm honda/cat unit that I use for everything. I use the green tip and run it perpendicular to the boards in a quick sweeping motion.
How often will you use it? If you use it frequently the biggest unit you can afford (4kpsi/4gpm is about the biggest before a big price jump) and it will pay for itself since the cleaning will go much faster. I used to have a 2800 psi cat unit from Home Depot and it worked well for years but my new washers are soooooooooo much faster since I can use the green or white tip and clean a much bigger area with each pass.

Re: What Pressure Washer Do You Guys Use For Decks And Fences?

I have a Troy pressure washer with a Honda engine from Lowes, I've had it for about 4 years now and I guess I'm surprised the pump hasn't failed yet (knockin on wood). I don't use it regularly though, more like once a month.

I do use it on decks, but not to clean, just to rinse. They can tear up a softwood deck pretty easily.

I have a BE with a Honda engine, the pump crapped out on it two years ago and I haven't tried to fix it yet. I may just buy an electric and trash the gas one.

You are using the wrong tip if they are tearing up softwoods. Mine will cut through a 5/4 PT board if I old it close enough. Use the correct angle tip and keep it 6"+ from the boards and you won't see a single mark on one board.

My pressure washer is a Troy as well. Had it about 6 years and has been used 2x a week at least. Does everything from cleaning gutters, running foam guns, cleaning truck, to cleaning concrete and decks. Only just the other day did it have its first issue. The runber fuel pump bubble got a split in it. Makes it a little harder to start now.

Gonna run this into the ground and get a electric kranzle. Won't have the hassle of fuel then.

That's the first time I've heard anyone say that. Maybe you should be saying "Don't use a pressure washer on a deck if you don't know what the f**k you're doing".
