What Do You Guys Think Of The Borders?

there's two decks here. The one in the background is actually the pool coping. I just got this in an email from my customer. This deck is on the ground and by a pool. It's two years old. He's sending more pics tonight with the lights on. Another happy customers!

With clips, they will/should set the spacing.
Butt to a border is usually 1/2 of that to allow for movement.

Aligning 45's across borders takes good work.
No way to align 45's with a 90.

We run everything wild, do the cut freehand, and drop the seam boards in.

I have had some guys who tried to work for me, did it the other way, seam first, cut everything to it with a miter box and complain because they weren't making any money.

They didn't last long

I cut all the borders and seam boards in first. Then remove them, set them aside and run everything wild after that.

thats how we do it. Our jobs are a pia in general.... Every lil bit off the plate helps the bottom line and prevents mental breakdowns. we do use track saws.

Yes, and the borders are easier to cut in when the deck boards aren't there. For me

Otherwise you're trying to scribe and find a 46, 44...or worse that will make the clean border corners that everybody sees.

If you can set your p/t lumber frame truly square, side to side and corner to corner, I applaud you.

I assume some slop in the framing and plan for a square top.
Something can be an 1/8 or 1/4 off, but not on the top...what is seen.

Yeah.

I'm starting a porch/deck tomorrow that has cascade steps off the back, 45'd, I think 4 steps.
I'm thinking about talking to the customer about doing a herringbone on the this, avoiding the 45.

Do you have experience with this?
Sounds good in my mind..
Maybe some tricky jigsaw cuts.
Have a short railing over the 45 meet of the steps.
