Our money is in a trust. My plans are, my kids won't need any of it. They are very bright kids I'm not worried to much about it. But there are very specific directions for our money and assets. The last dollar in your last hour was a joke.

Nice! I got it now. Hoping my kids are bright too, too young to tell at this point, (2 and 0) ha they'll be fine, except they got their looks from me.....

Dump mine into rentals too. Once had 60 and there was weeks/months I hardly worked while they made good money. Sold it all (whoops) and started deckin - now working to get back to that level by 50 then sit back and collect checks while my son's curveball makes me rich

Agree with the 2-3 weeks as well - people get tired of having their lives disrupted no matter how nice you are and explain how 6-8 weeks isn't really that long etc etc.

How many of you guys are selling decks on the first meet? Also, I'm thinking of getting a tablet to take on estimates to show precious decks I've built. Any of you do this?

Many years ago I didn't want guys to take pics of decks as they would show them off and say it was theirs.
Now that I own the material and don't use what others use, I make them take pics, because for them to buy it w/o me would cost them as much as the other guys.

So I get pics of everything we do, from their phones, they are sent to my email and than loaded to facebook and from there to the tablet. Which the sales guy has. Everything is broken into different category's like rail colors, fascia colors, floor colors. After several years we are now able to show all the different color combos on the tablet at their home.

Should they still have questions about the colors they can come to the showroom where all the different railings have been made into 3'x18" high samples. walk on a few decks and see the same pics they saw at their house on a 48" high def tv that scrolls through all the pics.

By keeping up w/it weekly, there r lots of samples to look at.

For about 8 years I've used a tablet or computer to show project pics, wouldn't do it any other way. I don't put all my projects on there just a selection of various styles and materials at various price points. I've done some 1 stop selling but prefer not to. Most of the times now I just email a proposal after I work it up at home.

Back about 13 or 14 years ago I brought along what we called a "brag book". Now days I bring a tablet. I work up a proposal send it by email and I don't do follow ups. I've never needed to do that. They are either going to use my company or they aren't. Usually when they are asking questions about my proposal 99% of the time I'll get the job.

Thanks guys. I'm going to buy a tablet then! I just met with my first potential deck client of the season. The ball is rolling.

The only sucky thing about a tab is the sun washes out the screen if your pitching the sell outside.

I've come across those people before, a couple make an excuse "The dogs are crazy and will jump all over and not stop barking", others just act all guarded, I'm thinking "If you don't trust your contractor it's going to be hard to do a project".
Then you have people on the other end of the spectrum that are like "Hey, nice to meet you, come on in. We're so happy you could meet today as tomorrow we go out of town for 3 weeks!" and I'm sitting here thinking "Really? You just met me 3 minutes ago and now you are telling me about how your house will be empty for 3 weeks?" People are weird.

I never question people's motives. 90% allow me inside, but I completely understand not allowing a stranger in the home that you have no idea who they are. Especially the elderly. I just do what they feel comfortable with. I have people that are so against having a Porta potty on the site they will leave thier home unlocked all day so we can use the facilities. I don't like that but it is what it is.

Re: If You Could Do It Again (decks)

I don't need anything fancy like that. I have my laptop for sketchup. I am thinking about the Samsung tab A. Either 8" or 9.6". The 9.6 is 100 more though but I think the 8 may be too small, especially if we are outside.

Great laptops, I found I never really flip it around like a tablet.

I just have an older ACER tablet that I've had for a number of years so I just deleted everything else off it and only put the project pictures on it, I can hand it to them and they can flip through or I can show them specific things.
