Huge Privacy Fence Gate

Hey guys have a customer that wants a 15 foot wide privacy fence gate I was just wondering how you guy would frame something that big.

Maybe two wheels also??

One at end and one in center?

I tried to just do one 5' gate and one 10' but he wants just one 15'

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

Thank you guys. What size post would you think would be needed? I haven't worked with steel Much or built a gate this big so no idea weight wise.....

Gate will be hinged by neighbors fence and swing inward to meet neighbors fence.

Don't mind crappy paint. Was all laid out before change of gate size

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

Don't attach anything to neighbors fence and make the gate a slider. No swing

Otherwise build two 7.5' swinging gates out of steel.

They can be covered in 1x6" redwood which is light weight. Do a pattern or something nice and use a router on the edges. I let my frame rust on purpose.

I would also recommend making it automatic, with a remote

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

We've done these before by covering pre-made/easily-available tubular steel ranch/farm gates, and the gates are not expensive.
Def need steel frame for that wide of a gate.
Figure 6x6 for hinge post and go 3' or so down with it.
Some of these gates come with the hinge system included - just make sure the bolts will handle 6x6. They are easily adjusted.

On sliders....
I'd go with a 'v' ground track and not cantilever the gate...much less expensive.
May have to build a bed for the track.

Good source.
15' is an odd width.
14' and 16' are commonly stocked.
If the picket height is well above the frame, you'll wanna tie them all together above the frame, so they don't get all individual/independent on you. The gate pickets are a total screw deal.
Last I remember, TS isn't stocking spring-loaded wheels for uneven terrain.
HD does carry a decent cheapo. We use a lot of them. $20 or so.
Plan to swing the gate away from the picket side...unless you want to get creative on the hinge end. Hinges inside the posts....

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

Tried to talk home owner into two gates or sliding but insists on big swing. Discussed cattle gate with him it may be a go for that.

Gate is swinging away so I can hide huge hinges with picket.

I seen those cheap spring wheels at hd but wasn't sure how would hold up.

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

There are a few ways of doing this out of wood, but steel is more practical. You need a big, heavy, deeply set and possibly braced post to hinge this thing off of. If you run the post 10' up or so, you can run a cable from the top of the post to the latch side of the gate to help keep it from drooping. You don't need wheels on a swing gate -they're more trouble than they're worth, IMO.

They don't generally. Post below the frost line (or ~4-6' for a big gate), so the post doesn't move doesn't move with frost heave/settling, but the ground that the wheel runs on does. Even with the spring they tend not to work very well over time.

99% of the time that gate is probably in 1 of 2 positions, wide open or closed.
That wheel, if set right for the surfaces in those two positions, provides helpful support.
A cap block or paver gets it, regardless of what lies or is rutted out between them.

You can do a turnbuckle and cable from above, but a totally-wood gate that size will not survive....unless it was possibly glued and screwed balsa...
Fiberglass might work...

If it's in Blowklahoma, it had better have a strong latch as well

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

There is no frost line stuff in Oklahoma.

There are wind storms de lux , A swinging gate is just not going to hold up against storms like that. A sliding gate would have trouble with it but at least it would have a fighting chance.

Re: Huge Privacy Fence Gate

I take it this is not the main entrance to the property?
If it was, remember you need to have a fire switch so they can get in if there is a fire.
Also, on something that wide, I would only do a masonry support for the hinge side; good size footing, filled CMU's, embedded elec conduit, etc.

No not main entrance. Just for back yard. Won't be used very often. Just to get sail boat in and out.
