Here Is A Real Beaut.....

I came across this today while bidding on replacing the deck and stairs....

I guess if you're right foot dominant this stairway/ladder shouldn't be a problem!

That's pretty crazy with the stairs.

Sometimes weird things like this are made for a reason... Could be for conjoined twins... highly unlikely, but always a possibility...

I started thinking on this and maybe the original owner was an elliptical machine user or salesman.............

Re: Here Is A Real Beaut.....

I've seen pictures of stairs like that leading to a mezzanine floor, but they were in architectural mags or art studios, and they were attractive, unlike that mess. There is one a few blocks over on Broadway which connects the second floor to a split level of the artist space...cute but dangerous, IMHO.

Re: Here Is A Real Beaut.....

It's a generally approved layout usually used in industrial settings and made of metal. You can have a stair run in a shorter horizontal distance if they're done this way.

Exactly!! Many mechanical-electrical mezzanines have this type of welded stair-ladder arrangement.

Not the best for carrying any type of heavy load up like a motor.

Re: Here Is A Real Beaut.....

Yes but then they're not a stair, they're an "alternating tread device". Only certain places you can use them.

I think you'd have to do some creative interpreting of the IRC to ever be able to approve one in a residential setting.

If I remember correctly those are called "Captain's Ladders or Stairs", Generally found indoors for loft areas or in boats because of the roof saving aspect.

Re: Here Is A Real Beaut.....

NFPA calls them alternating tread devices, which seems more appropriate than "stairs".

The railing has a special quality as well as the "toothpicks" supporting the structure.

This is a special opportunity for those "before" and "after" pics

Just put on new railing and keep the stairs and add riser covers

Lapeyre makes them, they are actually a really awesome alternative to a permanent ladder.
