Is This Deck A Little Off?

I live in an apartment complex and recently we had the deck replaced. I noticed some things that were odd or potentially dangerous, like nails sticking out from the bottom. I told my apartment complex about it and expected them to send the maintenance guy to look at it, but instead a rep for the contractor out. I'm not worried about safety - just quality. She came out dressed to the nines, high heels and all. I got the feeling she didn't know what "studs" or "knots" were. So anyway, what do you guys think?

This is all from the top of the deck. The bottom is worse. Most nails were already removed by the rep. The wood is already cracking in some areas and it's only been a week.

Re: Is This Deck A Little Off?

Sorry for some of the pics being dark. I'm afraid some of the knots in the wood will pool water and rot more quickly.

Re: Is This Deck A Little Off?

You can't tell at this point, but there were a lot of dents in the wood where they missed hitting the nails repeatedly. Some spots are not nailed in. It can be hard to tell the quality from these pics.

Re: Is This Deck A Little Off?

Nope, quality is easy to see, its crappy. But I wouldnt expect high quality craftsmanship with a subpar product, its pt. Cracking and checking IS going to happen, rot IS going to happen, warpage IS going to happen. The dents are because someone can't swing a hammer, the cuts are because someone can't measure, the deck is prob not glued and so will twist out as well, with only face nails.

Your profile says carpenter... you should know this.

That's the nicest decking job I've ever seen. Beautiful selection of deck boards too.

Nothing like the natural beauty of wood. nothing like the blameless putting out all the blame either.

What a fine sport

You're a tenant not a foreman or project manager. Until you're footing the bill and know what you're talking about go back inside

No perimeter trim board either.

Do you have any pictures of the rep?

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the board next to the trim on the side. Keep in mind this is a small deck, so there wouldn't be perimeter trim boards.

Re: Is This Deck A Little Off?

It did get mentioned, being a carpenter and all I would have thought you noticed that. Is there a certain size where border boards are no longer needed/required? Are you killers spawn?

Apartment tenant trying to get ammo to screw with contractor, I'll have to part in that.

Did you ever think about that's all the crappy apartment complex would pay for?
