Re: Butting Trex Boards To Picture Border Have A Lip

I'm not a deck guy, but I've seen that Trex edge swelling on repair calls. I thought it was due to prolonged wet weather over time.

Seen it on competing composite stuff, too.

Wouldn't you think I would've seen it or heard about by now? Thousands of square feet not once have I seen it. I also speak regularly to others around the country who've never had an issue.

Amazing! Lol

In fact I soaked Trex in water for two weeks without any swelling. I've put it in mud zero issues.

You live in what climate?

But seriously, I did not mean to doubt or challenge your expertise.

In your travels, have you seen swelling in any of the competing products to Trex, or am I imagining that, too?

Also, could be that I saw it in earlier versions of it.

Yes the old Accents had issues which they don't make anymore. The capped composite is a different animal.

Re: Butting Trex Boards To Picture Border Have A Lip

Here's the probable cause. My opinion. It was installed on a cold day and butted tight. Then when it got hot on a summer day they didn't leave enough space between the joints the ends will mash together from expansion, an improper installation. Also if screwed down, screwing too close to the ends may not split until this expansion takes place. Then you get shrooming around the screws. This combination can look like the product is swelling.

That's a good pic of the issue, following thread.

Are butt joints commonly installed?

Never seen that before. Is there a doubler at the joints?

That wet situation there tells me you should have a bigger gap than that. I've had them open as much as a1/4 inch and had them completely closed when it's hot.

Also you NEVER biscuit butt joints. Who knows the situation that might have caused. What's the biscuits make of?

Domino doesn't allow it to move properly. More than likely binds when it bottoms out against the domino. I'll shoot this photo to the big cahunas at Trex. Ill get some answers for you JMF.

One other thing I always do when I butt (which is rare) all my butts are cut at 2 degrees so the bottom of the cut is always spaced without the visual.
