Back In The Saddle...

Hey all, Hope 2012 finds you well and heathy (and hopefully busy!)Öneeded to take some time away, now Iím back and I thought Iíd post up some progress pics of my current project. Itís not the most difficult one Iíve tackled but hey, who doesnít love some framing pics?

This was what we were looking at on demo dayÖspit and hope were all that were holding up half the deck, the beam end had rotted completely through.

Original deck had beams run back into the house, I cut Ďem off at the wall and attached DTT2Zs and ĹĒ All-thread for my interior ledger holddown. Then, buttoned up the side of the wall w/ plywood and 9Ē flashing tape.

There was a thread about temporary supports, this is my method:
I build from the ground up, starting with the footings. When I donít have the time to let the concrete set up for several days before I start framing,
Iíll dig and pour footings.
Then, Iíll mount the ledger so Iíve got a level point to pull from.
Set up my laser/tripod, measure for post heights, then build some temp supports for my beams.
I install the beams, lock them in place w/ joists (which Iíll reuse) and start rolling joists. I can build the entire substructure while leaving the concrete alone.
When Iím ready, I cut the posts, install the post caps and tap them into place under the beams.

The temp supports also provide a framework to help with lifting big wood solo.

Gluing up the ends of my knee bracingÖI had leftover chunks of beam because I needed 13í per beam and the yard had only 16ís.

Joists rolled out (including seam board supports)

Knee surgery? Damn, sorry to hear that. I don't jump out of the back of my truck nearly as often these days!

Not quite as quick on this one as I was 4 years ago but I think that's mostly due to fighting off whatever the hell my wife has had for the past month!

Yeah, still in Springfield for the time being. I keep making plans, they keep falling through. 2011 was a brutal year.

Nope, not for myself, but with a different company than I was last January.
