Angle Decking Lf

Hey all. I can't believe after 400+ decks I finally have my 1st request for angled deck pattern.

how do I determine lf?

picture frame:yes.
single around perimiter and dbl on center. or single in middle.

Thank you all in advance for your time.

We just had a thread on this and Killer and at least one other guy had good techniques for this. A search might turn it up for you.

Since it's you, I'll lay it out in Sketchup and post it tonight.

Re: Angle Decking Lf

just happened to be working on a layout in SU.....is this what you're working with?? I never use LF, always SF and it works out just fine for me.

11'9 3/4" would be the length of your longest boards, order all 12's and you should be good to go - I would order 253sf + 10% = 275ish SF in all 12' boards.

Re: Angle Decking Lf

Since I am drawing the plans in sketchup I usually do a group or component of decking and just count the boards.

Yep, then you don't have to order any extra. This way you would know exactly what you need. But if you're not a SU user might be best just to order a little extra.

Re: Angle Decking Lf

It depends on if you're using hardwood or manmade but I usually figure that the offcuts from the shorter boards are used in the corner. So if your full length diagonals are 11-6 you use 12 footers and, as they get shorter, a 12 footer will provide you with two of the pieces for the corner.

In this case you would need 46 14' boards, if that were possible. Total lineal footage is 684 plus overage.

Re: Angle Decking Lf

you cant do single in the middle because you have a miter in both directions so you need a full board for left and right... unless you dont miter but i feel thats not "picture frame"

Yanni doesn't usually miter his picture frame. He's the one that showed me that skipping that hassle entirely was cool. That's part of the reason I spent 10 minutes helping figure out his cut list.

Depends on materials, but same here. I couldn't get a full load of any particular size in hardwood without paying a serious premium. I try to figure out a few sizes that will be optimal and go handpick my own load on a deck as small as this. For manmade though it would have to be mostly 20'ers. You can still do it with minimal waste though. I think something like 24 - 20's, 3 - 16's and 16 - 12's would handle the deck without joints.

Hey Cali. Nothing to feel bad about. I've never done an angled deck...ever. The other day I met with customer to review final details. And she's rambling on I said hold lady I gotta write it all down cause im a moron and can't nor do I want too remember. She gave me the nicest compliment and held my hand said I know now why you were higher then the rest and feel completely confident that I hired the right guy to do the job. Never stupid questions. Only stupid if not asked.

Re: Angle Decking Lf

My estimating books say multiply SF x 1.33 for waste.

So 19w 19x12= 228" - 22" (4 deck boards 2 ends double center)= 206"
17w 17x12=204"-5.5 (single outside picture frame)198.5"
206"x198.5"=4,089.10"/144= 283.97
283.97 x 1.33= 377.67 SF purchase + stairs+ picture frame

5.5" .458 x 12= 5.496 sf / 12ft board
377.67 / 5.5sf = 68.66........69 12' boards +stairs+picture frame

??????
