Back when all boards were a solid color you needed to do picture frames to bring visual interest, now we maybe do them once a year since the multi chromatic boards came out.

How do you cover the cut ends of the boards? Hold the fascia up flush with the deck?

He does nothing but metal deck framing, no worry about water intrusion with the facia capping the ends.

Oh nice got it. I know this has been talked about a bunch, but I'll say I just don't like the fascia capping the ends look, unless your going for ultra modern look.

I never cap the ends with fascia, decking always overhangs the framework.

We've been doing this for years, works great, looks great, way cheaper than picture framing.

I do that sometimes. Easier, faster, cheaper. I still like the look of a full frame better, though.

I agree. But in some instances it might be a win win win situation.

Did that for the first time last week on a curved bridge, where picture framing wasn't an option. It doesnt look bad either. Like picture frame a little better but not opposed to doing that. How does it look after years of being installed? Do the nails pull out?

I use PVC decking and it actually looks fine. I cut a return on the end so no core "end grain" is shown and use cortex screws to install it. 2 screws per deck board end. Obviously takes longer than nailing, but no where near as long as a real border.

That's my garage landing.

Nope, never been called back. We did a project last year right behind a project we did this on 4 years prior, I stopped by to look at it and it looked exactly as we'd left it.

Re: The 6 Day Deck.

And this looks super fancy but they paid a hell of a lot more for it.

This one is fancy too, but they also paid a bit more for it.

This one looks great as well and he was able to save a few bucks by NOT having to have curved border pieces.

Why would that be a good thing? Since you do it for other clients and for more money, would he be the type of customer you want?

That's true. But in my opinion is also the difference between a magazine cover deck and just another composite deck.

Those are out of my league. I can't do that yet. But I still get my opinion. (And it changes frequently).

Funny thing is the edge trim made the cover of a magazine... I'd rather make money than make covers, been in many magazines and product brochures, manufactures websites, etc. We make good money on the basic stuff.
One of our decks with the edge trim detail was the cover for Fiberon product brochure, it's still used on the presentation folders they make for contractors (at least last year, dunno if they've changed that this year). Someone must like it even if you don't.
