Hack Questions About Fan/light Combos.

Hi, I have two stupid questions that you guys probably know the answer to.

1. If I have a ceiling fan/light combo that has 3 fan speeds, do I have to buy a 3-speed switch, or will a 4-speed switch do the math on that? It's just about supplying power to the motor, right?

2. If I have the aforementioned fan/light and put it on a switch, is there a way I can remove the pull chains in a more pleasing fashion than just literally removing the pull chains? Is there a thread-in finial or something that's sold for that?

Thanks, Electric Bros.

1. Leave the fan's built-in switch on high and use whatever wall-mount speed control that floats your boat.

2. If you really really really don't want the chains hanging down, just cut 'em off flush. After all, you got wall switches, don't ya?

Instead of removing them, I leave them high, but not high enough to jingle against the fan body.

I've never seen a comes-with or aftermarket solution for covering the pullchain holes.

As for variable speeds, just buy 3 or 4 sets of blades, and swap them out whenever you want a different amount of air movement.

What Sparky said. I will add that you can purchase just center hole light dishes.

I think that's a joke, right? ( If so, what are you sipping tonight?)

Nope, not a joke. Never seen hole covers for that.

This thread should have been titled, "Now that vacation is cancelled, what kind of dumb stuff are you doing on your own house?"

1. Pull wires in master.
2. Purchase outlets and switches for entire house.
3. Drink heavily while looking at drywall tools. Maybe put up a board or two. Probably not. It is vacation after all.

or buy a remote control (add on or built in with the fan 'kit') that has the multiple speeds.

I stuck to my guns and went switch.

4-speed Westinghouse. Works.

I would have quickly removed fan/light combo unit and replaced with a Panasonic Whisper...ahh how peaceful the bathroom after replacement. Timed fan switch required as they are so quiet you will forget to turn them off.
