I work in Jersey on commercial sites. I know the carpentry outfit that was on that job, and I also know the company that was loading the sheetrock. It's crazy.

Re: Put On Those Hard Hats !

Not that I think you shouldn't wear a hard hat, but I wonder if it would have helped.

When I was taking my osha 30 we watched a safety video where a guy takes his hard hat off to wipe the sweat off his head. Right when he does it a guy drops a 3' pipe wrench from like 50' above him, and it hits him.

It's a 50 pound chunk of steel, I doubt a plastic helmet will help much, but what do I know.

That's a little bit different than a tape measure, no?

Is it though? We're talking something falling 500 feet. Doesn't really matter if it's 1 pound or 50.

Have you ever seen videos of the guys who climb radio towers throwing a nut off? They will go through an engine block.

Re: Put On Those Hard Hats !

The hardhat that I wear is pretty solid, I definitely think it would absorb a substantial amount of the damage from a tape measure. You have to remember there's a maximum velocity something can reach depending on its weight.

Hard hats are tested with a 10 pound ball dropped 4' onto them.

Re: Put On Those Hard Hats !

A hard hat could have possibly saved his life . IF that ruler bounced off in just the right way. I see these loaders all the time ..They're young BIG boys ! This story kinda hit home for me..

My dad always use to tell me as a kid that if you dropped a penny from the top of the empire state building, it would go through your head. I didn't believe it then but I do nowadays.

RIP to that unlucky fella.
