Re: Drywall Over Plaster Ceiling?

Thank you Roger, these kids think they have all the answers, I tell my customers my Plaster will be here a hundred years from now, the drywall will be repaired many time in that time period So you keep patching with your drywall I will do my Plastering, Oh yeah I'll be working on the Baldwin Theater in Downtown Royal Oak,MI starting the 29 of this month, the place was built in 1890 should I use drywall I would think not, how would you repair Crown Moulding or Cornice or Frieze Mouldings? When I do the job I'll try and post pictures
Mellison check my site out there are pictures showing what I do.

Well, at least we agree on not rocking the whole ceiling.

Re: Drywall Over Plaster Ceiling?

I would recommend not going over plaster, its just stupid and lazy either way someone is going to have a mess to clean up with no guarantee that you are going to hit structure with the drywall screws and the wall board itself is not strong enough to hold the weight of falling plaster

do it right the first time

I think you should just patch 3'x3' area. But, give the customer the option and price to redo the whole ceiling. If they opt to redo the ceiling then I agree with wmallock to tear it all out and redo with 1/2' or 5/8" drywall. IMO 1/4" drywall should never go on a ceiling. It's just way to flimsy. The final product would look like the ocean.

Re: Drywall Over Plaster Ceiling?

I should clarify.
I go over the ceiling mostly because I run into a textured ceiling that has been painted and the plaster has not fallen out.
For a 3X3 patch, clean down to lath, hot mud, float with topping mix or plaster.
Never a callback in 30 years of doing this? So if this isn't correct, that news to me.
For repairs to a kichen or bath without drywall patching, then its structolite and plaster.
I have been doing small repairs like this for years without problems. For large jobs I get a plaster guy.

Re: Drywall Over Plaster Ceiling?

I have fixed old plaster ceilings and laid over them with 1/2" dry wall.

Sometimes the 3 or 4 layers of wallpaper on the ceiling makes them not worth the effort of fixing.

I got all the reciepies for the old paster of yester years as well. I hope no one see's the bags of lime in my gargare.

We had to remove plaster and replace it with drywall ceiling. It is custom work and takes time.

I would suggest furring the exposed joists level to ceiling, find and chaulk-line the ceiling joists then board using 2 1/4 " screws. Stagger your butt (end) joints its easer to fill

Re: Drywall Over Plaster Ceiling?

For continuity reasons, remove all de-bonded plaster surrounding the existing hole, prime or de-dust the laths then build out with either gypsum or cement based base coat then plaster either the patch or prime and re plaster the whole ceiling. That way you keep the traditional ceiling. My personal preference would be to pack the patch out using layers or drywall, then mark out all your joists and laminate the whole ceiling.

Fill void with something even if only on joists. Locate and mark (pop lines) joists. Install 1/2" 4'X12' drywall just like if no ceiling was there with 2" roofing nails. Nail it properly- two nails 2" apart every 14", carefully getting them just above/below surface with a drywall nail hammer.

Does it comply with building codes to nail drywall on ceilings. We've not been allowed to nail drywall since 2000 we have to use drywall screws every 8 inches.

Why not just use a roofing gun?

Gosh, I wonder what the theory is behind that.
Granted screws are good when everything works right. But nails are good too, if done properly.
I use and the installers use nails to hang and then screw off.
I will have to keep my eyes open for that code.
Thanks!
