Unprofessional Or Just Sour Grapes?

okay,so I am still on this house from hell. Can't make any fast time on any wall because of what the home owner wants in them.I am laying used brick and sandstone in 4,6,8 in heights. On brick walls, she want stone batts around windows and doors. On stone wall brick batts. She wants upside down triangles, benches, stone and brick arches.......
So to say the least, working by myself along with a new laborer(one month on the job) things are going slow.So today she springs this.....I have a another brick guy coming to look, at 10 this morning.
He shows up and she introduces him to me.I shake his hand, and to tell the truth, his isn't a bricklayer grip.I let him know with my grip I wasn't happy with him on my job.Anyway long story short, she comes in and talks to me as I am hanging from her exposed rafters in her kitchen laying stone. She tells me he can have his crew here end of next week or first of the week after. She says I will keep doing my thing and they will do their thing.I told her I thought he was very unprofessional and that he should have gotten my number and called me and talked to me before setting foot on my job and try to take work away from me.I told her I have been in that position and asked to finish another bricklayers job or do a job another was hired to do.I called and talked to him before even going and looking at the jobs.

ok done venting......

I think I would work on collecting payment on what you have done, and walk. I wouldn't want to be on a job with someone else working alongside of me especially after a surprise visit. Finish the cope of the job you are on now and let this guy put his money where his mouth is.

So what's the real story? No contract? Time and material job?

Thats sucks man. I would do what Nick said personally, especially if I had somewhere else to be. Thats a slap in the face. Get paid, and tell her to pound sand, in a nice way of course, and let the limp wrister deal with her.

I don't deal with contracts or such.I am a small town mason, and we use our word as our contract. This and most of my jobs is labor only.

I did walk from the job after I finished the inside work I had.I got paid and left the job.She wanted me to clean up my brick mess, and I told her I would until I found out the other crew told her she has to clean up their mess,so I told her I wasnt going to clean mine(I put it all in one pile, which I always do).

nothing to do with the situation but...

Pound sand. It's a remark i see frewuently here but had never heard it before. I understand it in context (eff off, beat it, get lost, hit the bricks whatever) but what does it actually mean?

The situation she put you in, I think you acted very professional! I wouldn't have handled it that well.

I love my job, I love laying brick, it's just really, really hard dealing with people sometimes.

Later down the road when you look back on this, you'll see that she probably did you favor.

Don't let people like her get you down.

It would be professional if he cleaned up his mess.

Re: Unprofessional Or Just Sour Grapes?

not really Inner10.Where I am from, the general or the HO hauls away the trash unless it is requested before starting the job.I don't own a dump truck or bob cat to load and haul away remains of a 18,000 brick and 3000 feet of stone.I also don't have a place to dump it.
The general or Ho on most jobs have a roll off dumpster, which we dump our trash in.In this case, the Ho has the equipment, men, time and place to haul the trash to dump.

Re: Unprofessional Or Just Sour Grapes?

I have worked with a number of different people from humresconstruction and most of the time I am happy with the results - but you are right, sometimes people in this industry can come across as rather...'short?' I suppose would be the right or way of putting it. Interesting characters would be another …

You should really begin incorporating a decently worded contract into your jobs.

Re: Unprofessional Or Just Sour Grapes?

Am I missing something here? It was a job from he**, you didn't want to be there anymore, she got someone to replace you because it seems she was getting impatient, paid you in full for your time up to that point, with no contract, and you are upset because the other contractor didn't give you a call?

Why weren't you upset at her for calling another contractor? Seems to me if you wanted out, you got what you wanted and got paid on the way out...

What's the issue?...

Re: Unprofessional Or Just Sour Grapes?

Can't really speak for Stacker but from his other posts it seems like there isn't a ton of work in his area of Ok unless you want to work for next to nothing.

Also it seems that what he's pissed about is that the other guy didn't talk to him first asking if he wanted the help. Instead he shows up and is starting next week.

If i were asked to come in on a job that someone else was already working at I'd talk to them first and see if i was ruffling any feathers. I have respect for my fellow tradesman and to me that is the respectful thing to do.

To me, the issue is 'respect'....or the lack of.

Yeah, I get that... but the point is if he is not getting it done at the pace the customer wants and to the point where the customer is looking for others to finish, the reality is, it wasn't going to make a difference in the long and he got paid sans a contract...

If you are getting the boot, always good to walk away with a check...

Personally, I wouldn't step on the job or even quote it while another guy is working on it...

I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys booted and didn't get a check... so I guess count your blessings, no?....
