Yes, one thousand pounds is a Grand. Many US expressions are used in the UK, probably because of the amount of US films and TV here.
I think at the moment one pound = 1.30 Dollars.
You don't get much in the UK for 100 grand.

Rounding to the thousands, 100 grand is synonymous with 100 quid. So the story still travels well.
