Fireplace Draft

I have a client that is looking to close off the damper and make the flue weather proof put wants to leave the firebox open to place flowers or candels in.

Is this possiple? If so what is the best method?

Re: Fireplace Draft

Never used one, but seems like a damn good idea to me. You don't know how many 17 and 1800 homes I work on with a big wad of nasty old fiberglass jambed up the throat.

Re: Fireplace Draft

Stick a Lyemance damper on top.....if there is a flue tile protruding up top, this is an easy fix, and it stops everything up top; rain, bats, birds, whatever.

Re: Fireplace Draft

The masonry supply that sells fire bricks can get them as well as the custum sheet metal place that makes chimeny caps. Don't have to buy online, that's here atleast.

Re: Fireplace Draft

One thing to remember if you use a flue top damper(for a working fireplace)-- the damper it's self will restrict the flue size, and in some cases makes the flue section area too small for a good draw. The solution I came up with on my rumfords was to use the next size larger damper, and cut a piece of the next size larger flue to fit snug over the chimney flues at the top.--problem solved.

Re: Fireplace Draft

That works and is also the solution to having a spark arrestor when you use a Top of Flue Damper. Required in many localities.
