Brick Chimney To Wooden Chase Questions

The top 3rd of my chimney (mostly above roof line) has bad spalling and needs repaired. I can do about any type of work but have never done masonry work. I am considering transitioning to a wood frame chase at the roof line. Here are some of my concerns as I plan the job.

1- The top two clay flue liners will be replaced. Is there an adhesive product I can use between the old existing liner and the new one, or must I use a refractory mix?

2- Can the new flue liners rise up through the wood chimney chase with no horizontal support, as opposed to having rubble-fill like in a brick chase? The top crown will be much lighter than concrete.

3- How much clearance should there be between the flue liner and the chase walls?

Thanks in advance for comments and any suggestions.

Never saw what your proposing done before. I think you are in uncharted waters. Get a mason out there to fix it and swap roofing with him.

Nothing like the Hoover Dam had ever been built either but they figured it out as the project unfolded. True story, just recently watched the video on this.

Once I can get answers to my questions I can make a decision on what is the best course to follow.

I would not have an unprotected flue liner through a wood chimney

They fail all the time

Youíre supposed to use refractory cement however a lot of people donít use it

What makes a flue liner protected? Would it be the rubble that is piled in between the liners and brick on a conventional brick chimney?

Could nail strapping to it and side it. Make a metal pan for the top.

Yes, definitely plan to make a metal top/crown. Could you expand on what you mean with nail strapping to it? Is this to give horizontal support to the flue liners?

No you'll leave the brick chimney in place.
