If you say in Athens? My family has a pretty huge lake and I know most of the millionairs in that part of Texas. We just some working class ones. Get with me on the barn wood. I still am checking on that for you.

Are you a carpenter looking for some great, old wood to work with?

Are you an artist that loves to create unique furniture?

Are you a designer looking to design beautiful things for your clients?

Our two-story barn is made of 100 year old Redwood, and still has its original square nails made on site. Our gorgeous wood might be perfect for you.

Contact me at [email protected] if you are interested.

Re: Wanted: Old Barn Wood

My pleasure!

The finders fee can be paid in funnel cakes - Went to the Dallas flea market with my brother (who lives near you) 10 years ago. Never had better!

On second thought they might not be warm by the time they got here.

Re: Wanted: Old Barn Wood

On the subject of barnwood, I will never understand what the big attraction is. I had a 2nd home up on a lake in Wisconsin and it was originally built and lived in by a well-known Chicagoland builder. Anyway, he got his hands on a very old barn. If I remember correctly, the newspaper article stated that the barn was 150 years old. He took this wood and panelled the familyroom with it. To me, it was nothing but a haven for spiders. I literally had to VACCUUM the dang walls to get the spider webs out! Would someone please tell me what's so great about old barnwood? I think it's ugly and impractical, unless, of course, you want to start a spider farm!

Re: Wanted: Old Barn Wood

Back in 1985, I had a class in architectural archeology. As part of the requirements, I had to document an endangered historical building. The one I chose was an old sugar mill that was slated to be razed in Broussard, LA. The wood in that place was magnificant! 18"x18"x20' beams were common, and there were some 24"x24"x40' beams as well as all of the more normal sized lumber. All of old growth red cypress. Shortly after I did my survey, it burned down, most likely on purpose. What a waste.

Re: Wanted: Old Barn Wood

Here are some pics I dug out and scanned. The machinery was sold to a company in South America and is still in use. Look at those freaking gears. The freestories were recent and of metal, with concrete footings. The original clear-span was on brick footings, laid up in that black gumbo and in good shape after a hundred years.

Re: Wanted: Old Barn Wood

About 10 years ago, I worked on the old Alamo cement plant in San Antonio. They salvaged lot of it, but left a lot in place and turned it into a retail center and used the quarry for a golf course. As San Antonio grew, it surrounded the plant, established in the 1880s. There is another old cement plant in San Antonio, rotting away; I wish I had the bucks to develop it.
In this area, there are a lot of grain terminals wasting away, chock full of good wood and ulititarian design. Some are being salvaged or redone for residential/commercial use but not enough. I also do a lot of business with used brick. There is nothing more lovely than reusing rather than landfilling old construction.
