What Is This Part?

It's on the passenger wheel well. It has started to constantly run. Sounds like a pumpnod some kind. Vacuum pump? If it is constantlybrunning and making a loud sound, I assume it needs replaced?

Re: What Is This Part?

You are correct, that is a vacuum pump.

But it may not be bad. It will run until enough vacuum pressure is stored in the canister it is hooked to. Disconnect the tubing and plug the tube coming off of the pump. If the pump stops running it is working correctly and you have a leak somewhere in the system.

If it stops working entirely the Heat/ac control will default to the defrost vent position and you won't be able to get the air to vent through the dash or floor vents.

I have replaced a few of those and never had a bad one that made noise.

You most likely have a leak, does the truck have 4wd "shift on the fly"? I have seen those controllers go bad and leak.

Re: What Is This Part?

No shift on the fly. Manual hubs and lever. I'll be poking around this afternoon.

However, yesterday I put a brand new warrantied starter in it and now it will spin nice and fast, but won't start. Charging the batteries as we speak. Started fine before the starter went in, besides the starter now working at inopportune times.

Re: What Is This Part?

Is this a 7.3, or a 6.0? I can't tell from the picture, in that area they are pretty much the same.

As far as the no start, I'd check the fuses first. If 7.3 the fuel heater can blow a fuse and shut it down. I think the PCM turns things on at about 500 rpm's, so if it's spinning fast, probably not the batteries.

Nothing worse than a no start after doing a simple replacement part, hard to find the source....

Well, I waited until the next morning and it started right up. Must be fixed. Lol.

I hate it when things like that fix themselves. I know the problem is out there... lurking... waiting for the perfect opportunity to screw me over big time.
