Purpose If This Piece On Ford F350

Anyone know the purpose of this piece that hangs down behind the air dam on a F350. All it has done for me is to cause damage to the air dam when I run over a little mound of sand.

Looks like it would be easy to remove.

I think they where to limit the possibility of going over the top of other cars if involved in a front end collision, I took mine off as well

Could it be the inlet for the air box that came loose?

On my Excursion the inlet is mounted to the core support drivers side.

On the Excursion that was a bar that ran horizontal below the bumper.

I removed that and the plastic under the bumper soon after I got my truck. Never could figure out what it was for... my 03 did have a bar go across, ( I had to remove when I install my plow bracket)

that there is just under the frame, I don't see how it would help for air, no bar going across on my 2011

it's supposed to increase gas mileage. It seems like a huge road kill scooper-upper. And yeah the darn thing is going to bottom out on practically anything in the road. Great engineer design ? I think not.
