I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

Is there a way to install a door alert to see if my door has come open? I try my best to check and double check, but three times now I’ve taken off and my doors swings open. Is there some wireless Bluetooth unit that will help me know if the doors swing open?

Re: I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

Sounds like barn doors on the trailer?

I found out the hard way, the back of my trailer shifts around enough to somehow work the doohicky up that holds the latch bar down, and the doors came open.
Lost a couple of lights, and a small electric heater that were sitting on the floor.

Now I always put a pin or bolt in, and haven't had an issue.

Tape a sign to your dashboard...

"Make sure trailer is secure before driving off"

Cheap and effective.

I've had quite a few different trailers over the years. I can't say I've ever had that problem.

The first time it happened, I thought the same thing as OP, dumbass me forgot to latch the door.
The second and third time it happened, I was positive I had latched and flipped the keeper down.

Re: I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

I did it once so far. My buddy who lives down the road saw me drive by, he called to tell me and as I pulled over the car behind me stopped to let me know too. I was still on the phone with my buddy, getting an ear full from both of them. I felt like a real winner that morning.

Now I'm in the habit of walking around the trailer, check the doors, kick the tires (pretty sure that's as good as tire gauge) and make sure everything looks good at the hitch/chains/wiring.

Glad you’re not a commercial driver.

You’d get your ass red tagged at the first scale house, and there’d go the days profits.

Put your trailer door lock on your drivers seat. Or put your truck keys in the trailer.

Whenever I unstrap a load from the roof rack, I leave the straps on the drivers seat until everything is unloaded.

Had my board with me on a job, put it on the roof racks while working, and then remembered halfway home on the freeway. Someone got a free board that day.

How could you not double check everything is secure when you could possibly kill somebody. Understood you don’t care about your tools & other chit but I’ve got family out there on the road. I put you right up there with the guy hauling stakes & other form material on a trailer w/no straps or lights doing 80 on the highway. Very common here in Tx. D.P.S. just let’s em fly which I have never understood. Put a big s on your forehead & it don’t stand for superman

Re: I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

A couple of you guys are being a$sholes.

I've been hauling trailers for close to twenty years. I'm a college educated, licensed fireman and medical first responder, licensed builder running twelve guys in three crews, and a father of three kids under 11 that always need something or another. I remember a LOT of moving parts on any given day. I'm profitable, I'm careful, and I'm self-aware. Yet sometimes, I still drive off and get honked at because the side door of the trailer is wide open when the wind of forward motion dies at a stop light.

I too have often wondered about a very simple alarm that would help me remember, or simply back me up when I do forget. Leaving the side door open is not indicative of a lazy or stupid mind. It's easy to do and I applaud the OP for trying to solve his problem.

Contribute something constructive to the OP or shut the fu!k up. Just so you know, it doesn't make you look tough or particularly smart or experienced ; it makes you look like a prick. It gets tiring to see a couple of you guys repeatedly rip anyone to shreds that asks a simple question. Some guys need to be torn a new one if their questions clearly indicate that they are doing something dangerous or stupid. But this isn't one of those times. In fact, it's kindof the opposite.

Some of you pricks are hiding the same common mistakes you make behind a big tough hypocritical mouth.

Amen to onmywayup. Why can't some people just answer a simple question or not say anything? I haven't met a perfect person yet.
OP said he thinks he forgets sometimes. Could be the latch pops open and just needs the pin or a lock as others suggested. Seems like a simple suggestion to an overlooked solution.

Re: I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

I've recently had a run of stupid moves, and they always involve a disruption.

Last week I parked (momentarily) a paint tray with tools on the vehicle. Was almost home when it slid off and sprayed the lanes. I retrieved some good stuff there! One person honked, waved and tried to warn me, but I though I recognized the vehicle and just waved back.

Re: I’m An Idiot And Leave My Trailer Doors Open Too Often

If we're having dick competition, I'll whip mine out.

I'm a Licensed Building Contractor, Electrical Contractor, Emergency Medical Technician, former Volunteer FF, Licensed Commercial Driver for 22 years with all endorsements, included HazMat, Federally Licensed Motor Carrier (trucking company), etc., etc.

I didn't criticize a guy for forgetting $#!t, I made fun of him, and every one like him, who want a frigging "app" for every damn thing.

How about growing up and paying attention to what you're doing, and learning from your mistakes, instead of trying to find some damn thing with your phone to bail you out.

I'd say folk damn near can't even get laid without their stupid phone, but then I realized, oh that's right, they can't.

One of these days some guys gonna come on here and say "I keep forgetting to wipe my ass after I $#!t. Is there an "app"for that?"

Here's your "app". Grow Up.
