Are there any fans of this motor still around?

Back in the day when I did mechanic work saw nothing good about these engines. Cracked heads, cracked main webs in block, few broken crank shafts. Was GMs poor attempt to build a diesel engine.

In high school I rebuilt literally thousands of of 6.2 injectors. Man there were a lot of those engines around.

one guy i know didn't keep it long enough to need an oil change.

another, he had it for about 2 years....

he said one of the best day of his life was when he drove a d9 over it a few times....

I had a Mad Max Looking Blazer with a 6" lift and the 6.2 diesel. Truck was awesome, but that motor was always needing to be worked on.

I remember that motor having it's fanboys. Just wonder if they all have drifted on to real diesel motors.

Seems like most people here had the same experiences I did.

I worked for a guy that had one with 300k miles on the truck.

Probably 3 or 4 rebuilds or replacements of the engine though.
I just remember it being gutless as heck.

don't recall the exact years but early 80's-early 90's.

I believe they were done around 98 when they changed body styles.

My ex father in law managed to get 200k+ on his...and he never had is worked on. Changed the oil...and that was it. Now...he was one of those never in a hurry guys, and literally idled around the country in it. As a farmer, he could do that. Carried a diesel fuel tank for machinery fill ups...never pulled a trailer.

He is the ONLY person I know who had no issues with it...and he burned farm diesel too...which was not as clean as road use fuel at that time.

Seems like Cadillac had a diesel too...and someone had an engine that turned cylinders off....when not under load to save gas....don't remember...those came out of the mod 70s.

The Cadillac diesel was legendary for poor reliability. Olsmobile produced three diesel engine, the 350 diesel which was loosely based on the Chevy 350 was used in the Cadillacs. One of my close friends had a Ols 98 with a 350 diesel when I was a kid....there was a car club for Ols Diesel owners who would do a convoy down to a car show, and if your engine died on the way you would push it into a ditch, take the plates off and hop in with someone else.

The 5.7/ 350 GM diesel was nothing much more then a 350 Oldsmobile engine turn into a diesel. The nice thing about them was when the diesel died you could put a 350 olds gas right in , everything hooked right up. Did a fair number of transplants in the late 80s -90s.


Also when it come to 350 GM engines a 350 chev was the bottom of the pile, a olds, Cadillac , and Pontiac where a lot longer lasting engines.

Those 5.7 engines had one positive, they were quite good on fuel economy.

I've not heard many people disparage the SBC 350 before, unless they were Ford or dodge fans.
I know I ran my SBC 350 GMC short bed half ton thru heck and back for ten years before foolishly selling it. Best part about it was being able to sit in the engine bay while working on it.

I am not saying the chevy 350 was bad , good running engine millions around, fairly decent engine life. In rebuilding them which I did a lot of , a lot of the parts did not hold up as well as those other 350s. Olds blocks where hard and did not wear as much. As well as much of the other hard parts. 350 chevy where cheap to rebuild because of so many around. The other no so much. Because of things like thing the 350 chevy would of made a very poor diesel make over. Thus the reason to use the Olds a much heavier engine and more durable, even giving the trouble the early ones had.


Yes I am a Ford truck man, but my cars have been Buick or Olds 3800 one best last engines made for a car.

I have considered getting a c20 with a 6.2 just to putt around in. They can hit 20+ mpg.

Plus I have a soft spot for Detroit diesel's

I've been looking around for a K20 or K10 for my fun vehicle. Found one with the 6.2 and only 80k on the clock. That's what prompted this thread. It was cheap, but I think I'm gonna pass.

Found a 73 C20 with only 40K on it. beautiful original truck 350/4 spd SM465 but more than I wanted to spend on a 2WD.
