The swing open feature is kinda neat to avoid placing ramps and putting all of the weight on the tailgate when loading a motorcycle or something

Or when pallet loading with a forklift... The forklift drivers always have a tendency to keep creeping forward until they bump the tailgate which eventually damages it

Apparently some forklifts have to bump into something before they go into reverse. Don’t know if it’s true but that’s what the guy at my flooring warehouse told me, just before he bumped into my tailgate.

Re: Check Out This Fancy Tailgate

I still wonder how those fancy tailgates will survive loads of gravel or sand. Or off loading big rocks or pavers etc.

After 10 years if abuse will they still function or even close properly?

Probably not but that is not what they are designed to do.

I don't see the new GMC tailgate holding up at all as it's electric open then when it's down you have to find the button (electronic again) to open the mid section then the step is manual.

I like the looks of the new RAM tailgate, I am in the market for a new truck and had ruled out RAM just because of their knob shifter. I may give them a second look, I have a RAM now.

Most of you are probably too young to know about the Country Squire station wagon , the tailgate opened both ways, folded down and swung out of the way.

For the work i do there is no way in hell that they will hold up.

I have enough trouble with my basic slam click tailgate let alone some fancy tailgate that probably needs to be perfectly aligned to operate properly.

First time you try to close it with a bunch of gravel in the gap its done

I can see that thing getting caught by the wind just like a door.
End up with the corner of your bed tweaked out of wack and then the tailgate won't close.

Re: Check Out This Fancy Tailgate

I had a rental Ford Lariat the last few days while my Ram was getting repaired after a hit and run. I opened the tailgate with the key fob a few times before I figured out what was going on. Don't care for that feature. The tail gate also lowered very slowly, obviously to avoid slamming but I didnt care for that feature either. I have stuff to do, just open so I can get going!

Short story long, this tail gate looks neat but I don't think I'd like it. If they could figure out how to prevent gravel from getting wedged in the gap of the tail gate I'd buy one tomorrow.

So screw a hunk of canvas across the gap. Problem solved.

But that would be ugly, so...

Hell, too young to remember---I used to repair them.

How about the GM clam shell tailgate? Used to repair those also.

If thats the same type of wagon where the rear window rolled down then those were great, I remember hanging my head out the back tailgate window watching the road roll from underneath the car.

God could you imagine today seeing some kids in the back of a station wagon going down the highway hanging their head out the rear window watching the road? It would be all over the news about parent neglect

I tried that but it kept snagging and would cause my tailgate to push off the hinge while closing

Just drill some 3/4" weep holes.
