Charge wire for dump trailer
 
Recently came across this situation where I had to use my dump repeatedly. The battery died on me. Now, it may be that my battery is toast, but it still charged back up on my battery charger. What Iím thinking is add a wire straight from one of my truck batteries directly to the dump battery. This will charge it better than the factory charge setup. My question is what size wire should I use to have it actually work properly? I was also planning on putting a breaker in line under the hood of my truck so I could just shut it of when I wasnít using it.

Are you going to set it up on one of the plugs in the seven prong connector? So when you connect the trailer lights it automatically plugs in as well? Or are you doing a separate wire all the way through?

If thatís the case then you are limited by how big the connector is, But definitely go as big as possible and donít forget an in-line fuse between the trucks vehicle battery and the plug in at the bumper....as close to the battery as possible

I have my fuse about 6 inches from the battery


Have you thought about installing a solar charger which would keep it fully charged all the time with the sun?

Donít forget if your truck is off and you are using your dump trailer you will also be drawing from your trucks vehicle battery so you might run the risk of draining the battery as well if you donít put a battery isolator on it. You could also unplug it as well but if you forget hopefully you have jumper cables handy

Definitely going to run independent wires. I want to leave the factory setup alone. I guess that Iíll basically have to run a wire big enough to actually draw off my trucks battery in case the trailer battery just canít do it. Or I would need to run a wire large enough to charge the battery in like 10-15 minutes, which is probably going to be pretty large. If I did that I think Iíd run a relay to shut off the feed when the pump was actually running. That way it wouldnít draw too much amperage through the wire and blow the fuse, but would fast charge when not in use. My factory setup is currently a 25 amp fuse. Any thoughts?

I have thought about just running a battery cable all the way back and use one of them jumper cable plugs to connect to the trailer, would put a disconnect up front though.

If youíre going to do that why donít you just get jumper cables that are long enough in the event that battery goes dead

I would have jumper cables handy just in case and put a solar charger on the trailer this way the battery is always fully charged and you probably rarely would need the jumper cables

All the trucks I've owned had a 7 pin connector. Which means it has a "charging line" already installed.

Any auto electric shop or dealer can install it. It's really the way to go.


My old Ford was owned by an RV'er, so it was set up to turn off with the key.

My current Dodge is wired to be always on.

The charging line will run lights in a cargo trailer, or charge a travel trailer battery, or whatever other accessory is wired into the trailer.

I was thinking the same thing that if he has a seven pin on the truck it already has a charging line to the bumper....the #4 terminal is the standard for the power wire. Of course you have to verify this and also to you need to do a Lot of driving to allow sufficient time to charge the battery, so if your dump trailer runs are all short trips then it wonít fully charge it anyhow

The truck I converted did not have a seven pin and I had to do it myself so I had to run a line from the trucks battery to the rear bumper of the truck to the connector

Yeah messing with jumper cables is something Iím not interested in. Plus Iíd need 30í ones. I talked to my mechanic. It seemed the most sense is to run a dedicated 8 gauge or heavier wire all the way back with a dedicated plug and have a circuit breaker under the hood if I want to shut it off. That way it will charge fine and I could actually use the dump if the dump battery was toast.

My brother had a truck with a 7-pin, brand new from the dealer, and they just never installed the charging line. :blink:

Said it was an "extra", and he'd have to come in and pay to have it installed.

You might want to investigate an "automatic battery isolation device" so you don't run down your starting battery. I would go talk to a local independent battery specialist if you have one

My truck has the charging wire and it works. It just doesnít have enough charge in it when doing close dump cycles. Thatís why Iím thinking heavier wire to really get a good charge and as backup power if my trailer battery canít keep up with factory charge wire.

Now the question is: if Iím running both wires together: the factory charge and the heavier wire I install, will the heavier wire back feed current into the factory charge wire since itís running right off the truck batteries and the alternator?

Did you check out my link above?

I donít think just a larger wire will solve the issue, There are other limiting factors such as alternator size etc. etc. that would prevent the truck from fully charging dump battery between short dump cycles

Bingo. I find the wires in my plug harness work just fine for charging any battery on my trailers, but just in case I have a long set of cables, plus a long cord with a plug an alligator clips to run the pump on my auxiliary fuel tank or plug to a battery.

How many amps does the motor draw? The answer to this question determines the cable size.

I suspect most peoples deep cycle batteries donít dump their trailers because theyíre overcharged. It ruins them.


It doesnít take a whole lot to spin a hydraulic pump.


I think Iíve charged mine twice in the last year. Granted, not a whole lot of dumps, but it doesnít take much juice.

This thing works great. I keep it in the van, and itís plenty powerful enough to lift the dump trailer when the battery is not charged enough to dump by itself.

how old is your battery and is it any good? may be that it's aging and it's time to replace.

assuming your plug has 12v, figure out where it's hooked into the truck properly. is it getting 12v+ even when the IGN is off? double check the ground, I've had plenty of issues back in the Mid-Atlantic region with my ground going bad and therefore not completing the circuit. Was difficult to find b/c when the trailer was hitched, the hitch would make a (partial) ground. Unhook the trailer and leave it plugged in to test (or disconnect the ground which may be inside the dump trailer battery box).

I use to use cheap walmart battery's on the dump trailer and learned that they'll die short of the warranty, consistently.

it's nothing more than a 12 volt motor driving a hydraulic pump...very similar situation to a snow plow...shouldn't really draw much more than a starter motor. i plowed snow 35 years, never did the 2nd battery thing, the alternator always kept up. think the biggest one i had was about 100 amps.

were it me, and you're using that dump repeatedly during the day....run a 4 ott..how the hell you spell that...welder cable from battery to battery. that way the pickup battery can help while it's hoisting.

can't believe it would never keep up.
