Any Major Issues With The Ford Transit 250/350

I posted a topic a few months back to address needing to change my vehicle situation,

https://www.contractortalk.com/f41/t...-alone-394665/

I have now decided to get a van instead of a trailer. I test drove a 2018 transit today (med roof), and it was surprisingly a descent ride. I really like the idea of having a rolling mini garage that can house all my tools with me at all times. I would build some shelves and carry all my painting and carpentry tools all the time, and just throw in the odd things like baker scaffolding and sprayer when the job dictated.

I personnel know people that have the Chevy express, load them up, and run them hard. I know that they, and the GMC, will easily run for years.....but I really want to the cubic cargo space and not have to kneel inside the van. Plus I have loved all my old and current F-series trucks.

Any current or former transit owners out there with any insight to talk me out of the transit, it's about a 60/40 split between Ford and Chevy. The 40% toward the Chevy stems from the cheaper price and proven track record. I am also open to the promaster van, but figured I stay with ford which I have had good experience with. I searching for 2016-2018 in all models, gas engine, with less than 50K miles. I also plan to buy by the end of the year for the write off on taxes. Any reviews I have found so far talk about the transit needing brakes more often

Thanks in advance,

Die hard Ford guy...but look at the Ram ProMaster. I drove the Ford, Ram, and Sprinter. If you dont tow a lot the Ram is great. Little more room than the Ford med roof. Lower to the ground and decent power for a 6 popper. I thought the stock Ford 6 lacked pep vs the Ram.

There's a big forum for the ford transit. Google it.

I have one, and I love it. I have the egoboost and man it scoots for a van.

The EcoBoost's are nice! My F-150 has one. The standard 6 banger...not so much.

Golden View. I'll check out the forum. Have you had any major issues with the transit since owning it?

I don't tow but 3 or 4 times a year and will still have a truck to use when needed. I'll give them a test drive. Have you had any major issues with the Promaster since owning.

Spencer from this board seems to love his Transit. Here is a walk through he did. He has some other great videos to watch too.

Zero. Mine's only 2 years old with 21,000 miles. There is a recall on the drive shaft. They want to replace it with a new design before 30,000 miles.

There is also a TSB about the antifreeze corroding the heater core. I haven't looked into that yet.

Only things I heard are easy to break into and easy to get locked in back. No interior handle

His point about the long rear overhang not playing well with driveways is a good one. In my area a lot of houses would not be easily accessible due to that.

I could see a problem with that especially with a trailer hitch

And if you have a trailer attached as well good luck !!

Had a cracked coolant tank that was replaced and the side door cable broke. Both fixed no problem. The other big reason we went Ram was our local Ford dealer isn't really good to deal with and the Ram dealership is excellent. Makes a difference.

Re: Any Major Issues With The Ford Transit 250/350

I have a 2017 Transit 250, med wheelbase and med height. I love it BUT.... when i am on the job site working outdoors my van doors stay open all day, and this leads to a dead battery. The problem is the timing / delay of the interior cargo lights, they stay on too long, and then when one of the six doors (cab doors too) are opened then it resets the timer. I had no end of trouble in my first summer with dead batteries. Ford dealership could not fix it ( i will give credit that they tried) so Ford could only recommend to disconnect the cargo lights.

I now use a DeWalt 20 volt LED light hanging on the bulkhead and move on with life.

I love the van otherwise, i have the 3.7 V6 and tow an enclosed 14' trailer fairly often and it is no trouble, if i towed more then i might have gone with the Ecoboost.

The reason i did not go with the Promaster is due to it being front wheel drive, i tow bucket lifts off the road and so front wheel drive was a no go for me.

All in all i would go with a Transit again, but heads up on the interior light issue.

Reading the first part of your post, the first thing I was going to say was that you might try replacing all of your lamps with LEDs. Sounds like you have.

But seriously, look into that. I have a couple of LED strips in my old van that I sometimes forget to turn off, and they run all night without noticeably draining the battery. And they light the thing up like daylight.

Re: Any Major Issues With The Ford Transit 250/350

Our Promaster turns off the interior lights after approx 5 minutes. We leave our doors open all day and never have had a dead battery. We even ran extra led tap3 lighting off of the other dome lights.

Re: Any Major Issues With The Ford Transit 250/350

I got some cheapo LED bulbs online and they are brighter and solve the battery issue, which I had. 30 minutes of light each time a door was opened and left open, so often most of the day.

Re: Any Major Issues With The Ford Transit 250/350

I do know that one guy on the transit forum has had every problem you could think of with his van and Ford will not replace it. They are very difficult to deal with in a "give back program" not so with Ram.
I heard of someone who got a new promaster after 8 or 9 months due to a engine/transmission issue that could not be readily fixed.

I think there is a version of that guy on the Ram forum, the sprinter forum, the express forum, etc.

Not as bad as this one guy, his issues went on for over a year. Truck was at dealer more than 6 months straight waiting for parts, and when they were replaced it still did not solve the problem. Would have been easier just to give him a new one
