TBA Meeting 2 (Tool Buyers Anonymous)

Here's what I'm proposing; at the end of each week we come to this thread and confess our "sins" for the week. We are a sick lot us "tool buyers" and I think it will help knowing that we aren't alone and there are others like us out there! I'll go first...

Hello, my name is Terry and it's been 12 hours since I bought my last tool. This past week I purchased a used 1/2" Dewalt hammer drill for $55 (it's used so I don't think it should count!) and new tool belt (I really needed it and it was one with the built in back support so I don't think that should count either since it should really be classed as a medical purchase).

Whew, that feels better getting that off my chest. I'll just sit down now and turn the podium over to...

This thread is a continuation of the original TBA Meeting.

I'll start this off.

HD had this rapid charger and 5a battery for $99. The battery alone costs more than that typically.

I know my man card may be in doubt now, but I was baking something and didn't have a mixer. Wow, now it is no longer in doubt. I think I lost it.

At least it is Black and Decker

After awhile it gets to the point of just how many chargers does one really need.

Was looking at the M12 screw gun 1/4 chuck , $ 59 for the kit compared to 54 for the drill, but already have 3 chargers.

I had two chargers crap out on me a while ago and I have bought quite a few tool only buys with no battery or charger, so the rapid charger will end up in the truck plugged into the inverter so I can charge quickly while working.

tgeb 11-27-2018 09:11 PM

Also, it's like getting a charger for free when you consider that the battery on its own usually sells for more. So why not, might need to loan one out one day.

$100 ?!?!? That's a good deal even for a used set. I just bought the Dewalt version and it should be here in a couple days. I'd have gone Milwaukee if I could've found any used ones here that weren't going for almost the same price as new.

Dewalt rapid deploy work table underneath there somewhere. Bunch of random hardwood boards, Lathe out in the shop but the manual is pretty much the same thing, classic 4 for $20 Bessey clamps half in frame, Bacon Jerkey and some other stuff.

Agreed. The aisles at all the ones around here are so filled with cardboard displays of drill bits and other small crap that I can't get a good working man's cart down half of them. Made a huge mistake of trying to buy supplies for a job on black Friday.

It is a used one, but in good condition. Did some repair work for neighbor lady, her husband was a contractor that got shot a few years back, and traded labor for it. She is selling off all the tools.

Santa showed up today in a big brown sleigh!

This thing sure makes some nice cuts in hardwood. I was thrown off a bit by the sound of the motor compared to the 10" cordless but she ate 2" x 3" laminated walnut, hard maple and birch blank I glued up no problem. Very stable head compared to the 10", and blades are dirt cheap so maybe I'll actually have a miter saw I can keep a decent blade in for nice pieces of wood.

Also, really digging the Harbor Freight lathe and their "Pro" turning chisel set. Once I sharpened them properly they hold an edge really well.Turned 4 bottle stopper blanks and the laminated hardwood from above into a 19" French rolling pin and sanded all of them to 600 grit in about 2 hours.

TRThomas 11-29-2018 02:03 AM

oh and if you notice the vertical line of spots on the wall just about in line with where the lathe chuck would be... if you plan to turn some small projects ~1" diameter), you need to be up around 2200 RPM to get clean cuts. If you plan on finishing them with CA glue, as I did, be sure not to leave it at 2200 RPM when you go to apply the glue. 600 RPM is more than enough.

You picked the best cordless tool (IMHO) to start with. Only one I use any more. It sands REALLY well too, something to keep in mind if you're needing to sand something into a corner.

madmax718 11-29-2018 01:06 PM

thats a awesome deal on a propex tool. I had just ordered one and paid way more than that for just a bare tool and 1 extra head.

madmax718 11-29-2018 01:12 PM

Bought bosch 1617 router with both bases, bosch SDS dust shroud, 4 dewalt clear tops tuff boxes, 4 dewalt small tuff boxes, some marples chisles, and 3 tuff racks for the boxes. Was just telling the mrs that it was only 800 but there's some stuff I forgot like the m12 propex and a bunch of fittings... so.. it was more like 2000... ooops

I've had the old version of that and found that the, Milwaukee hit harder and faster, so I bought 2 Milwaukee tools that size for the underpinning work I do at times.

That being an new/updated version of what I had, might do better than the red tools....
