Tape Measure Note Pad

I've mentioned this before in other threads, but I never posted how to put a permanent notepad on a tape measure.

Since I came across a 'spare' tape that I hadn't done this to, I decided to take some step-by-step pix to post.

You'll need a tape, some epoxy, tin snips, utility knife and a sample of white laminate countertop.

First, you need to get down to the case of the tape, so strip off the label.

Then, use a sharp utility knife to score the case of the tape. This will give the epoxy a better grip.

Place the laminate sample on the case, and draw an outline of where you need to cut it.

Using tin snips, cut the sample out to the shape needed.

And check for fit.

Re: Tape Measure Note Pad

Mix up a dab of epoxy.......

.... and slobber it onto the case of the tape.

Gently press the sample onto the case, wiggling it around to spread the epoxy underneath evenly.

Allow the epoxy to set, and now you have a handy notepad to write down measurements, phone numbers, whatever!

When you don't need the 'note' anymore, use your finger to erase it!

The tape I use (metric, don't remember the brand) has a white label that I use for that. Nice mod.

Or, you can just buy one of the ProCarpenter tapes from www.fastcap.com for about 8 bucks, and have the white writing surface built in (along with a pencil sharpener and some other neat features). Then you can put the time you spent epoxying that laminate to your existing tape to better use!

What.... all 3 minutes? Gee, I don't know what I can get done in 3 minutes.

Besides, those things don't look like I can measure to the center of a 24x24 ceiling while on a ladder.

Why go through all that...they have rulers with erasable pad on them already ins, I been using them for a long time and they cost the same as any other ruler if not less.

Jeez.. everyone must think this is rocket science.

It's just sticking some laminate on a tape measure fer cryin' out loud. I ain't going to Mars with this thing.

Has anyone ever considered that not every tape measure has this? I have yet to see a Stanley 25' Fat Max from the factory like this.

Re: Tape Measure Note Pad

Thanks for taking the time to demo that, good ides, those snips look like they have some seniority, lol . I wonder if that mod would keep lowes from exchanging the KOBALT tape measures, wouldnt think so, but if you do anything at all to confuse the window lickers at the customer service desk you will be there 1/2 hr trying to do a 5min task

Rulers? Mrs. Morganthau in third grade used to whack my knuckles with one of those. I use scales and tape measures these days.

Yes, there are a few that have a built in writing surface, but they're not mainstream and you'd probably have to go out of your way to find them. It would certainly take longer than that simple modification.

Like the other guy said, I write on the back of my blade. Just spit and wipe it off. I do like your idea though. When I get some time I might have to try that.

Re: Tape Measure Note Pad

Sorry, but that is way too much effort. Leave the tape as is. Place some Avery Lables over side , cover with 2 layers of Scotch Magic Tape, vertical, then horizontal, trim excess, can easily write and erase.. . been doing this for many years, takes a minute.

You show up on my job site with a tape measure with fractions printed on it and I'll send your ass home.

Wow. Sorry it was too complicated for you.

It took you longer to read it than it took me to do it.

This was just a picture sample of about 20 different type rulers out there...So don't let sparks fly out before you get an electric shock
