There is no such thing as a stupid question, just a stupid answer.

Instead of "equipment".

What about " Machines", "tools" and "materials"

tools and materials make a machine, a machine makes materials and tools, materials are needed to make tools and machines.

same as the old saying "which came first the chicken or the egg"

Nate,
On your survey you forgot to list wife / girlfriend, I'm sure you'de find someone who would consider them in the equipment catagory.

Two Things.

First, this question doesn't have anything to do with this site. I wasn't sure if you thought I was asking about renaming a forum or something.

Second, I may or may not be wrong but I always thought:
Equipment = Machinery, Tools, and Work Vehicles... but I'm probably off.

He's right... considering we do as much work or more than any of those listed above.

Re: Survey: What Is Equipment? Choose All That Apply.

Equipment is something with which a person, an organization, or a thing is equipped.

A machine is a device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form.

A tool is a device, such as a saw, used to perform or facilitate manual or mechanical work.

Material is the substance or substances out of which a thing is or can be made.

So Equipment is a Machine, A Tool and a Material

Re: Survey: What Is Equipment? Choose All That Apply.

Sounds goofy, but when I hear the word "equipment" I have always automatically figured something with an engine, ie skid steer, excavator, trucks, post hole diggers, lawn mowers, etc...

Anything else IMO is either tools= saws, hammer, blades, caulking gun, etc...

material is obviously the substrate at which you are using to produce/create/build something aided by tools and equpiment.

Just my simple way of looking at things, if we're talking and you start talking about all the "equipment" you own and go on to tell me about your new table saw, cordless drill, etc... I'll have beer squirting outta my nose. I wanna hear about earth rumbling machinery/equipment.

I always considered all those things equipment, except for the building materials.

Much depends on the reason for asking. I'm thinking for tax purposes and in my state. The results will be skewed without proper introduction.

Technically, anything from a screwdriver to a freight train can be considered a 'tool'. The Prudential Building could also be considered a 'tool' for selling insurance.

Re: Survey: What Is Equipment? Choose All That Apply.

You want to hang sheetrock on a wall.

You use a screw and the threads mechanically hold the screw in place. (a machine)

A machine is a device consisting of fixed and moving parts that modifies mechanical energy and transmits it in a more useful form.

The screw uses mechanical energy to hold the sheetrock against the wood stud (a tool)

A tool is a device, such as a saw, used to perform or facilitate manual or mechanical work.

The screw is made of metal.(material)

Material is the substance or substances out of which a thing is or can be made.

So in order to have the proper equipment to hang the sheet rock you need a machine, a tool and material.

What would it take to "equip" you to complete the desired product?

I guess that is what I was thinking.
I'm actually surprised that more people consider a vehicle equipment than power and air tools. Interesting.

The building materials thing was just thrown in there for fun.

Bob
(No hijacking intentions, just too good to pass up)

bob, you say that like it's a bad thing??? haha

Back to behaving....

Nathan ,We actually break ours down into catagories for inventory purposes, not that it's right or wrong, just comparison... catagories are

Small Tools- anything less than $50 in value
Hand Tools- $50-$300
Tools and Machinery- $150 and up but can not fit in tool box or is stand alone product such as table saws etc.
Equipment- price doesn't affect catagorizing, anything here is stand alone, big and bulky, and used for specific functions ie..concrete mixer
Heavy Equipment- Bobcat, Backhoe

Just one way to catagorize things...there of course are many many options and opinions.

If it stays on the job when you leave, it is material (over-orders excluded). Everything else is equipment.
