New Miter Saw Extension Wing (picture Heavy)

Thanks to a bunch of people who took the time to share their miter saw setups, it helped a lot for getting some ideas.
Andy Guillion has a really nice setup, really liked his idea to get really long supports for floppy materials like pvc.
http://www.toolsofthetrade.net/truck...er-saw-stand_o

Justin. Just cool everything, really liked the integration of custom fence for Jim Chesnut style casing system. Stole the sash lock idea and stand mounting rig
http://www.contractortalk.com/f40/ka...2/#post4766929
Festool dude: some really neat ideas
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckYlF578KEA
Aaron. Really liked the aesthetics and functionality
http://www.contractortalk.com/members/aaron-a-102577
Overanalyze: Gave me the idea to store/mount things under the wings themselves (will be stealing the crown jig)
http://www.contractortalk.com/f40/ka...2/#post4767049

Unboxing: Sash locks and bedrail connectors hold it together (carrying handle is on the side with bedrail connector that has the prongs so gravity holds it together when carrying. Eyebolts are for a future shoulder strap)

6í means it can store in my truck bed easily

Setup on dewalt compact miter stand, pretty much identical to Justinís setup with aluminum plate

I used 5/8Ē T-track perpendicular to the saw so I could use either festool clamps, or Kreg automax clamps with 5/8Ē T bolt. Also left ~1/16Ē gap beside the track as a hook for the tape measure when doing really long measurements on trim. Will be used for future jigs like crown jig, acute angle jig, small parts jig....

Recessed Striplox connector in ends of both wings so I could mount them together for really long pieces that need support, like pvc mouldings. This gives me ~ 13í on one side of the stand if need be. Roller stands are used as extra support like Overanalyzedís setup.

Re: New Miter Saw Extension Wing (picture Heavy)

I used these four sided aluminum T-track extrusions for fences. They only come in 4í lengths, so I can do one on each side, or mount them together on one side and have jigs/stops mounted on the top or side up to ~10í

Still have to make a crown jig and a few other ideas, but figured Iíd share progress so far.

It is a bit heavier than I'd like, but I'll make that sacrifice for functionality.

Re: New Miter Saw Extension Wing (picture Heavy)

These help with the weight when you load up the wings. My long fences have some weight to them and these keep everything stable. Looks like you have enough space when nested to store them on the wings.

Re: New Miter Saw Extension Wing (picture Heavy)

love seeing what you came up with .looks like a great project .
i saw the foam for cutting on in one photo . i will make a sujestion . get a scrap of shag carpet . i use two small pieces . i can put them on any surface to cut . an out feed as large and flat as yours can work real well . used it for making accute angles on the ends of deck boards . i could cut the angle with a tracksaw ,then slide it over to cut the butt with the mitersaw . though i can cut on any surface with the carpet .takes up little space in my box truck loads and unloads easy .

Very nice. I recently made a set also.

My biggest thing is that all my wings are made to mount on the kapex. I'd like to come up with some kind of block I could mount to a dewalt that would allow me to mount my UG, best fence, or homemade wings to a dewalt or similar saw.

wow, can't believe I missed some of the posts in the links you shared.

I really like your design and those who came before you lol. Nice work and thanks for sharing the links too!

did you drill the holes in the wings for the dog ear connectors or buy the plywood like that? A month or two a guy was selling premade tops of various sizes w/ holes on CL in the DFW area.

Heres what I use works well. Nice and lightweight, quick setup cost me about 80 bucks in material. New miter saw extension wing (picture heavy)-imageuploadedbycontractortalk1480282629.946391.jpgNew miter saw extension wing (picture heavy)-imageuploadedbycontractortalk1480282663.876663.jpg

It was your post in another thread showing your new wings that reminded me that I never did post mine. Always love seeing your setups, they're very inspirational. Thanks for sharing!

I took the idea from Justin's setup for the mounting blocks by getting a second pair of material supports for the Dewalt stand and replacing the plate on top with a large piece of 1/4" aluminum plate. This lets you adjust the height of the wings for different saw table heights and gives lots of mounting hole options.

Might be tough for the three that you mentioned because of different mounting holes, but I would think if you had a large enough piece of aluminum that you could drill the different mounting holes for the different wings in them, but I haven't seen them myself. Alternatively you could drill holes in all of the different wings at the same location and use a recessed pan head bolts if the aluminum of the UG and best fence is sufficiently thick.

Thanks! Lots of great setups out there. I like how this thread is turning into a "Show us your miter saw setup"

As for the holes, I drilled them all myself. Primarily to save weight because I used 3/4" ply (needed to recess all of the T-tracks), but I had I feeling that I'd probably use them as a secondary assembly table for small parts or in conjunction with the my other assembly table. They have turned out to be quite handy in the field for clamping down when coping, small assemblies...etc

I use 3 different saws on my stand. I adjusted the height for a little while but it got old. I just locked the mounting block at the height for the tallest saw base and shimmed the other saws to the same height with horse shoes off the saw mounting brackets. Just drop them on and get to work.

I used to use AD&E brackets drilled into each saw but attaching to brackets attached to the stand is easier. The ease is most of the reason I stick with the DeWalt stand.

Re: New Miter Saw Extension Wing (picture Heavy)

Been trying to make wings for my saw for a while. Had a set like Tylerwalker32 but they took up to much space to store. Put this together yesterday. Going to make another for the other side. Itís a 6ft commercial threshold. Mounted a block of aluminum to the saw and the outfeed with a kerf that fits the rib on he bottom of the threshold.

With the saw off itís fits nicely on the stand and takes up no extra space.

Going to add a t track for clamps and a support leg in the middle.

It'd be cool if you could have a track saw rail that doubled in that function.

Awesome Idea Stunt carpenter! Indexing the rail to that stop is genius.

The problem I would see with using a track saw rail for me is that when Iím using the track saw the miter is usually set up.
